Kicking the Football Habit

When Buffalo Bills tight end Damar Hamlin collapsed of cardiac arrest after making a tackle, it set off a flurry of think pieces and debates about the safety and future of football. But with over 100 million viewers expected to watch the Super Bowl this year, it seems like football’s future is pretty clear. So, if a player almost dying on the field isn't enough to stir a longer, sustained debate about safety in the sport — then, what is? Audie sits down with former NFL player Nate Jackson and sociologist Daniel Sailofsky — who quit the NFL after a decade of being a super fan — to talk about football's hold on the country and the moral quandary of supporting the sport.

  1. I quit watching football when the kneeling crap started, I get more done on the weekends and I even lost some weight.

  2. More people suffer concussions from cheerleading. More people suffer serious injuries from soccer. But yet ya’ll obsessed with trynna cancel football. Say you hate American culture without saying so…

  3. Hello Audie, I am another who has given up the gridiron. I was there for the first super bowl as a kid and I gave it up years ago for similar reasons. Unfortunately until the public recognizes the Romanesque similarities to the gladiators( who we know they had no concern about their living or dying) the salaries will continue to rise and there will be no shortage of grist for the mill. If ever the spectators bloodlust should wane then and only then will the public lose interest in gawking, the same way they slow down to look at a car or train wreck, the visual stimulation of violence will continue to pry open the fingers of the easily enchanted and entertained(distracted) public’s disposable income. The same policy of cash for self sacrifice is always going to find favor. My point is that it is a lower brow mentality that is driving this so called sport. And from what I have seen in recent years, there is a push on to dumb down the average American. Intellect is suffering across the nation and the dumber it gets the more people like trump will worm their way into government to even further restrict intellect and create even more fans to embrace violence a a reasonable means to achieve their goals.
