Thousands of central North Carolina residents spent much of last week in the dark following an attack on two electric substations. It follows years of warnings from the federal government that the power grid was an attractive target for extremists. We examine how this attack upended daily life and look at what can be done to protect the grid going forward.

How crazy is it that this rarely happened when I was growing up but now in the last 25 years it’s gotten worse. I have neighbors with generators. It goes off if it rains or the wind is blowing. Trees down or a car accident. Transformers blowing. Endless nonsense. Plus I pay $290 a month for gas & electric. Now we have to worry about assholes shooting up power stations. Smh
@Brien Doyle Have you seen Elon Musk’s recent tweet: “My pronouns are *Prosecute/Fauchi* ”
Must have something to do with the previous 4 Twitter Files releases 🤷
🇺🇲🧂🇺🇲
@Harvest Smiles : Easy dippy I have family who live in Texas and Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Colorado and Nevada and Oregon and Massachusetts.
@Harvest Smiles : Lol, you think I give a shite about Elon Musk your savior who is a hypocrite.
@Brien Doyle oh, I thought you were gonna say you read it on Twitter a year or two ago… But no actual data huh? Weird.
You know where you can find some real data, the Twitter file releases… 😘
@Brien Doyle Oh, is that a sensitive subject. I didn’t know.
But unless you revolve around the ‘Rules for Radicals’ you would know it’s better to focus on the message/info not the messenger. But if thats all you got I understand.
His tweet was something like “My pronouns are: Prosecute/Fauchi”
Kind of weird, don’t you think?
In preparation for such a power outage emergency, we need a large amount of excellent LG batteries made in Korea.
South Korea is a good ally
@ObinAtor
If you are a valued ally, revise the anti-inflation law that discriminates only against Korean-made electric cars.
South Korea is considering all sorts of sanctions, including a ban on the export of semiconductors and kimchi to the United States.
This is insane.
And PROFANE !!
If every home had solar panels, everyone would always have access to electricity during the day.
Going on week 2 of 3 weeks expected clouds and rain. Explain how these solar panels work again…
Richard Wilson can you breakdown actual cost of unit, subsidies you were afforded and the monthly/yearly savings you now “enjoy”…
@Harvest Smiles Most solar panel work, even in cloudy conditions, but not as efficient. You need a dual-fuel generator with a solar power setup as a backup or when your fuel runs dry. Wind is a good alternative or even hydro if you could have it.
@Poupee W sounds like you’re really racking up some major expenses now…
@Harvest Smiles I bought my PV grid tied system (which is about 3,000 Watts) in 2008 so that all of the prices are completely out of date at this point. I paid almost 10 times the amount per watt that PVs are selling for now although I had good subsidies at the time. Even so my system paid for itself as of 2 years ago in the state of Maine which is not known for its sun and I am now enjoying essentially free electricity probably for the rest of my life! I’m retired now and it’s nice to know that I will never have to pay more than the minimum monthly charge for electricity (about $6.50) . It doesn’t matter how much the cost of electricity goes up it won’t affect me at all.
A few years ago, developed countries could take out each others powergrid via cyber attacks. Mutual “annihilation” prevented this. Has this since changed?
I’m sure attacking every aspect of the energy supply chain doesn’t help.
How vulnerable is the power grid of the US?
Very.
Every single infrastructure in the US is vulnerable.
Blame it on corruption.
Soon they will charge us a $50 “security fee”.
And that will be called the trump tax. Trump’s maga crazies blow up the grid unless we pay their monster boss. Pay the trump mob and they won’t blow you up. It’s extortion and racketeering just like trump Org has been doing for decades.
They should really have ARMED SECURITY GUARDS at those substations to prevent such things from occurring in the future I think!
You can’t get someone to work cutting grass for $25 an hour..
As a European, I have never understood why America, to save a little money, put electric cables on poles, rather than burying them underground… To cause an electricity crisis in America, you just need an axe!
probably so!
Just ask California how that’s working out… Many areas forced out of home insurance only to have no choice but to use the California “Fair Plan” that is double or triple the price… go figure.
Usually most people don’t mess with the grid cuz they don’t wanna be ELECTRICUTED! LOL…. That’s a deterrant!
When CNN mention an issue, you know it’s coming because they’ve been advised by their friends in the security services.
In the Seventies it could be quite exiting! One minute without broadband now could trigger a riot!
It is an antiquated system vulnerable to the elements.

Yes and me too investing is the fastest way to Financial freedom. Investing is building wealth and that has been my priority thanks. 🙏
Nothing was mentioned about security cameras…all facilities should be covered from every angle with cameras…all around the properties…..solid secure fencing surrounding the grids etc…..
They will find whoever it was and charge them with leaving their cell phone near a power station. This is domestic terrorism.
We all know what led to this attack. We know what the motivations were…
There’s a lot of loony tunes in this country running around with all sorts of firearms. “An armed society is a civil society,” Yeah, right. smh
Getting rich off crypto is much tougher than it seems. I keep losing money while trading with these YouTube videos and finding a trustworthy professional trader to help out with these trades also appears to be nearly impossible. This is extremely annoying
