This ruling doesn’t exonerate Assange, it condemns the deplorable condition of the US carceral system. US “justice” has a poor reputation worldwide.

@fiereke Another demonstration of being above the law. The pilot, Captain Richard J. Ashby, and his navigator, Captain Joseph Schweitzer, were put on trial in the United States and found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide.

Judges in England are notoriously conservative as they are elsewhere, but in this case, I hope that the judge made the decision on a basis of law, and not because of political pressure to “get back at the USA”. ISTM that Assange has had enough time behind bars, or in confinement in the embassy. Oh, and then Trump just “loved” Wikileaks, way back !
@Tony D’Arcy What prompted this judge’s decision is not important at this point. What’s important is that he won’t be sent to the U.S. Everyone who has been following this knows it’s the plutocrats around the world, primarily those in the U.S., who have been championing for his incarceration. They know, they’ve been committing crimes against humanity, and they don’t want to open the floodgates to other Julian Assanges, Edward Snowdens and Chelsea Mannings. Therefore, they are collectively working to crush him and his acolytes.
USA has NOT sent back the woman who killed a young man here in UK..USA wants everything their way…SO glad he is NOT being sent to the lunatic asylum on the other side of the Atlantic…..

Trump was considering a pardon for him, definitely want him to get a trial and do the appropriate time if convicted. It’s a very sad time here in the USA, hopefully the new administration will extradite the woman responsible for vehicular homicide.

Many countries do not allow the extradition of prisoners to the USA, if they have a chance to get the death penalty.
And sometimes other poor handling of inmates and suspects also play a big role.
The problem is not which crimes Assange did or did not commit, but the state of the US judicial system.

@The Grey Penguin I don’t see how the case you’re talking (the wife of the diplomat) in any way relates to whistleblowers. Yes, a lady got in a car accident and killed a motorcyclist (and yes, it was her fault). But it was a British judge who ruled that this woman had diplomatic immunity under the treaty.
The issue was that the extradition treaty between the US and U.K. had a flaw in that diplomatic immunity didn’t apply to embassy staff but did apply to their families. (This applied equally to the families of both US and U.K. diplomats.) Both the US and U.K. subsequently agreed that this was a flaw & fixed it. The problem is you can’t change the law and then apply the new law retroactively. (Treaties are considered law once ratified.) The UK courts acknowledged this (and ruled that the woman regretfully had immunity) & American officials can’t legally do anything after the fact bc the old treaty language was in force at the time. So although what happened was tragic, it’s really not the fault of America. It’s the fault of both governments in negotiating a treaty with flawed language. And it’s certainly not an example of the US taking advantage of anyone.
