Funny you should mention the map… In March, Kyiv City was practically surrounded, Sumy Oblast was overrun, Chernihiv Oblast was overrun, Kherson City fell, Zhaporizhia Oblast was being contested, Donetsk was partially taken, and Luhansk was almost completely taken.
In April, Russia retreated from Kyiv Oblast, Chernihiv Oblast and Sumy Oblast. They gained almost no ground in Zhaporizhia. They failed to capture Mykolaiv Oblast. The only advances were in the Donbass, where the stated encirclement around Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk kept on shrinking and shrinking. Russia finally managed to capture Sieverodonetsk on 24th June, and captured Lysychansk on 3rd July. What should take 95 minutes to _walk_ at a comfortable pace in peacetime took 9 days for Russia’s military in ‘special military operation-time’.
One month later in August, the map had barely changed. If you weren’t paying close attention, a timeline video of this period would appear to be frozen and only the steadily advancing date showed otherwise.
Yet another month later on 3rd September, the map had still barely changed from early-July, but Ukraine’s counter-offensive in Kherson Oblast was just getting under-way; with the Kharkiv surprise counter-offensive mere days from commencing. From 6th September to 12th September, Ukraine recaptured 8,000 sq. km of territory from Kharkiv Oblast.
Beginning 12th September, Russian insistence regarding observing the map took a new, ironically humorous turn when Azerbaijan attacked Armenia. On 13th September, Russia proudly announced they had successfully brokered a ceasefire, but both sides confirmed it was broken within minutes of coming into effect. The following day, Armenia invoked Article 4 of the CSTO (which is very similar to Article 5 in NATO), formally requesting military support which was promptly rejected by President Vladimir Putin.
To summarise the map of Ukraine: Russia retreated from Kyiv Oblast, Sumy Oblast, Chernihiv Oblast, failed to capture Mykolaiv Oblast, retreated from Kharkiv Oblast, and is losing ground in Luhansk Oblast.
To summarise the map overall: Russia is not only losing the war in Ukraine, they can no longer be relied upon by the Collective Security Treaty Organisation.

Ukraine certainly needs more air-defence, but also aircraft such as the F-16s and A-10s sitting in storage in the USA, getting more out of date every year. These will make a huge difference to the Ukrainian ability to perform suprise attacks and almost immediate back up in defending its army and civilian centres from repeated Russian incursions into Ukrainian territory.

The biggest thing is Putin is telegraphing his next phase against the southern coast and beyond, how do you make peace with someone who is planning the next phase and holding onto an isolated position for that phase. Interesting and encouraging to hear military experts describe the Ukrainian military as fast learning, and as good as any fighting force on earth at gaining technical proficiency with sophisticated digitally controlled weapon systems. As an American, I wish we could do more to help the Ukrainians drive Putin’s forces and loyalists out of Ukraine. Ukraine may well be the leading country in Europe in the decades to come.

@Walking introvert Yes, I want to see Putin’s forces driven from Ukraine and that is being accomplished on the battlefield. Any compromise with Putin will only embolden him and he will strike again(invade more sovereign land/countries). Putin is an autocrat and expansionist and will stop at nothing to preserve his power. The daily bombing civilian facilities in Ukraine is just one proof of that.
