People don’t realize that the 5 civilized tribes (Creeks, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Seminole) were considered “civilized” because they took on many of the Europeans ways that lived in Southern part of this country, including slavery. Many of the Chief-tons of these nations were mixed with whites and spoke English during antebellum era and had many slaves.
Also, all of these tribes fought with the Confederacy during the civil war, except the Seminole Indians that to this day still include freeman as part of their tribe and their constituents.
