Hundreds arrested on first day of Hong Kong national security law

At least 300 people were arrested July 1, with nine arrests of five men and four women on suspicion of violating the national security law, according to police. Hundreds turned out to protest China's central government decision to impose a sweeping national security law that critics say has stripped the city of its autonomy and precious civil and social freedoms, and cements Beijing's authoritarian rule over the territory.

  1. All you have to do to find out who rules you is find the ones who you cannot critisize

    1. “Not just to punish, but also to deter” You know what I miss? I miss Habeas Corpus. It’s been forever. I am so sad for Hong Kong people.

    2. No, we do not. People protested in the first place because the police murdered a man in cold blood, and that is what police have been doing to black Americans for many years. More out of control policing is NOT what is needed.

    3. The second comment was for “roja” I think, the all caps “we need this here” guy.

    4. @Rojo I got a better idea, you just move to China instead. America and you would both be happy…win, win

  2. No coincidence that this is happening on the same day Putin has thrown what was left of Russia’s fledgling democracy in the trash.

    1. the good news is everybody’s watching. heck…i’m in North America watching these insane turn of events occur in real time.

  3. Highlight of the law:
“This law apply to non- Hong Kong permanent residents who violate this law outside Hong Kong” – Hong Kong Security Law, Ch.3- 38
i.e., even you are a US citizen, never been to Hong Kong, and support Hong Kong in various ways, you will violate the law.
“The law also apply to the area in ships/planes that are registered in Hong Kong” – Hong Kong Security Law, Ch.3- 36

    1. @Gintoki S Guess what, “53 UN members express support for new security law” in UN Human Rights Council (7/1/2020).

    2. Wait…. does that mean that if for example I’m flying from Los Angeles to Sydney but the plane is registered in Hong Kong and I’m idk wearing a shirt that says Free Hong Kong I can get arrested? Lol

  4. Yeah, do y’all remember those protests????… ya know, the ones that were happening until one weekend a virus had them on lockdown…. crazy…

    1. @B Dub omg, i know!!! I thought i was the only one that noticed that the virus “happened” to appear right after hong kong citizens started to actually WIN the fight against mainland china, strange………………….

    1. @nevarran I hope you are just joking..!!
Sorry for your misconception of “National Security Law” in HK that executed by China Govt. I am a Chinese, and was born in HK. You may criticise your govt as long as not trying to have HK to be independent, or helping foreign powers to intervene HK’s politics issues … & Etc. Then it should be fine.
China govt just tried to stop all kinds of violence and terrorism in HK, due to whatever happened in HK last year.
US, Britain has similar law as well. HK is part of China, China govt is definitely authorized to execute the law in HK under 1 country 2 systems.

    2. @kce #Beijing #fakenews 😂 yes I’m sure the UK was expecting the Communists Regime to do this 😂😂

    3. @kce What’s wrong with HK independence? USA won independence from UK. Vietnam won independence from France. Argentina won independence from Spain. HK could win independence from China. They just need to win a fight.

    4. The difference is in the system of government. The US uses an electoral college system, in China they use a socialist system. In US, the protesters are the smarter guys and the country is led by the dumber. In China, it’s the dumber who protest and lead by the most capable. In US, no improvement until there are protests, in China, many improvements until there is a protest.
e.g. In 2018, HK was ranked 3rd for human freedom by Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute, and the Liberales Institut at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The US was ranked 17.
After the protest in 2019, HK’s ranking collapsed.
As such, please do not think the protesters in HK are doing right, they are destroying HK.

  6. When will China make the move on Taiwan? This is just a test on Western Reaction- or lack thereof? 🤔

  7. All those people will never be seen again. The Chinese version of the KGB going to make them disappear.

    1. @Joshua Allen pls tell me you are a troll… There is a problem in the US but there is also a problem in HK which is more drastic is up to you. But please don’t conflate what’s happening in the states with that in HK.

    2. @Joshua Allen There have been numerous cases of HK policemen using their 357 magnum revolvers to shoot and kill protesters.

    1. The law came into effect at 23:00 local time on 30 June, an hour before the 23rd anniversary of the city’s handover to China from British rule.

It gives Beijing powers to shape life in Hong Kong it has never had before. Critics say it effectively curtails protest and freedom of speech – China has said it will return stability.

The new law’s key provisions include that:

Crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces are punishable by a maximum sentence of life in prison
Damaging public transport facilities can be considered terrorism
Those found guilty will not be allowed to stand for public office
Companies can be fined if convicted under the law
Beijing will establish a new security office in Hong Kong, with its own law enforcement personnel – neither of which would come under the local authority’s jurisdiction
This office can send some cases to be tried in mainland China – but Beijing has said it will only have that power over a “tiny number” of cases
In addition, Hong Kong will have to establish its own national security commission to enforce the laws, with a Beijing-appointed adviser
Hong Kong’s chief executive will have the power to appoint judges to hear national security cases, raising fears about judicial autonomy
Importantly, Beijing will have power over how the law should be interpreted, not any Hong Kong judicial or policy body. If the law conflicts with any Hong Kong law, the Beijing law takes priority
Some trials will be heard behind closed doors.
People suspected of breaking the law can be wire-tapped and put under surveillance
Management of foreign non-governmental organisations and news agencies will be strengthened
The law will also apply to non-permanent residents and people “from outside [Hong Kong]… who are not permanent residents of Hong Kong

    1. And we will be until global WiFi become a thing and governments are no longer able to censor its citizens.

    1. @Shawn Corbin What an arrogant and selfish comment. Didnt you hear what Fauci just said earlier today? He is expecting 100.000 new cases PER DAY, already today it increased with new cases from 40.000 per day to 48.000 per day, the increase is 8000+ per day and its increasing exponentially!
You guys are in for real trouble in the US, but you as an individual doesnt seem to care, as long as you get your freedom to choose, becuse you are young and healthy it doesnt affect you right? You cant seem to think further then outside your own sphere, that is the american way, everyone for himself.
It doesnt matter if your old relatives die in their bed, as long as you can get your fucking freedom to choose. Yeah america the land of the free.
Shame on you Shawn. Come back here in a couple of months and rethink your comment when there are millions dead in the United States.

    2. Well, the HK protesters are the equivalent to protests in the USA against wearing a mask. If you want a protest that could REALLY make an impact on democracy, Black Lives Matter is it.

    3. @Shawn Corbin amid a pandemic, wearing a mask is evil while not wearing a mask is good? Why don’t you just say protecting lives is evil while making more people sick and died is good?

  8. “According to international treaties, China is supposed to…” Your fist mistake was assuming China abided by international treaties.

    1. @Valdemar Herald lol treason?…..expressing discontent to the government is treason?…..how can you came up with that conclusion?….

Can you give me anyone in the US detain to a concentration camp just because of expressing themselves?….

    2. @Valdemar Herald treason?….treason on the oppressive regime?….lol is that you Kim Jong Un or Xi Jing Ping?….

    3. @Valdemar Herald There is a very real and public Texas succession movement that’d like to see Texas separate from the US. There are groups in California who wish to separate their state from the US as well, particularly vocal after the last presidential election. None of the individuals expressing these beliefs have ever been arrested, unlike those in HK. You have a severe misunderstanding of the US constitution and the 1st amendment.

  9. 10% footage from July 1, 90% footage is from long time ago. Just look at if they wears masks or not.

    1. The epidemic is largely under control in Hong Kong, with a typical day seeing 0 local transmissions. It’s not necessarily true that people without masks means the video is old. It surprises even myself to say, Hong Kong is actually able to do some things very well.
