Trump’s administration staff aren’t fools, but Trump will not tolerate a serious attitude to the virus within the White House (i..e masks, social distancing, proper testing / contact tracing and all the other medical recommendations). His staff are unprepared to confront him consistently, but it is Trump who is responsible for this latest crisis.

@rob head Well. I’m not aware of any other government in the world where Covid-19 is bringing more positive tests to light each day. Boris Johnson’s similar cavalier attitude to Covid-19 did lead to some infections of colleagues, but not to the same extent as Trump’s administration. Also, a local school is not the same as national defense and national security implications. Pence should have been made acting President until objective medical science clears Trump. But then this is Trump and an administration that runs on his ego and rampant narcissism. And ‘dropping like flies’ means that they can’t carry out their duties, during a period of a health crisis, which they are supposed to be the major actor in addressing.
