In this case a no fly zone is a declaration of war and likely would lead to escalation and WWIII. We need to support Ukraine, and NATO has been unified. But engaging in the conflict is a step that could lead to escalation, possibly nuclear escalation. Plus, it would not be NATO entering the war but the US. That’s a different circumstance. A lot of people discussing the topic of escalation seem not to understand why and what the consequences of escalation would be, whether US or NATO. NATO is no substitute for declaring war. Each state would need to declare war. So, as I said, it ends up being the US and Ukraine vs Russia. NATO and the alliance have done as well as possible. It is clear to me that Ukraine should have already been a member of MATO, but you had a Russian puppet in charge for a while, so that complicated things. And the US supported Ukraine joining NATO in 2006, Germany opposed it because it would offend Russia. Plus again, this was the justification that Russia gave, that we were provoking Russia and that opens the door for many other things that can happen worldwide.

One reason I believe it has been made clear [at this moment] that the US will not put boots on the ground or in the air is because it would give Putin heaps of propaganda when planes get shot down etc. to say it’s the Americans and other allies, UK and Australia would automatically agree to provide some support based on recent history but which country would want to be targeted because wherever those planes flying from would then be a Russian target. I understand this. A no-fly zone isn’t theoretical, it has to be implemented and enforced by fighters in that airspace and SAM systems. Enforcing that would mean Americans air forces shooting down Russian air forces, in a conflict zone. So an act of actually enforcing that no-fly zone, would be an American de facto declaration of war with Russia. Same for any other country taking on that role. This is why we do our best to enable Ukraine to defend _itself._ And in many areas, as long as we csn get the equipment and arms to them, and they can get it to where it’s most needed – Ukrainians are very capable of putting up that defense.

They have enormous motivation and tenacity to fight this fight – something the Russian soliders do not – they don’t even want to be there. What Ukrainian fighters are predominantly lacking, is the armament, equipment and supplies. That is something their neighbors and countries all across the world are working their a$$es off to help them out with. Doing that, providing them the tools and mesns they need to succeed, is something that does not require more countries going to war.

@Russell Thorburn There already is a no-fly zone for _all_ Russian planes, even including private planes, basically over all of Europe, sans Belarus and Ukraine.
@HopeFounding rule in NATO is that NATO “does not import conflicts”. By this it means, a country cannot have ongoing territorial conflicts when joining NATO, as Ukraine has had since 2014 because of the Russian annexation of Crimea, and later adding the separatist conflict in Donbass. If a country with an ongoing territorial conflict joined NATO, that would in theory, immediately trigger Article 5, committing all NATO members to defend that member and partake in that conflict.
NATO is a _defense_ alliance. It will be there if a member is attacked, but its primary function is to _prevent_ conflicts in the first place, through that unified strength. Hypothetically, admitting Ukraine into NATO today, would in efffect immediately make 30 countries, NA and almost every country in Europe, at war with Russia (and Belarus). Pretty much instant WW3. With nukes.
The world should unite against such brutality on human lives.
Ukrainians are fighting for all of us against a dictator. And they risk everything. And they do it even though they are hopelessly inferior militarily. We will also be able to bear a few disadvantages if we can support them with it.
