    1. Chinese goods have improved the living standards of the west immensely. Chinese people are working the same job that anyone else would be doing but for about 2 dollars an hour. Be a bit respectfull for the millions of chinese people who slaved away to make everything you use for dirt cheap. Even if you do not like the chinese regime you can still recognize how the chinese people worked so hard to make your life much better.

    2. @Nocturnal Recluse Trump realized how important energy independence is for national security and he warned NATO about the dangers of dependency on Russian energy and tried to get them to wake up and reverse course before something like this happened. Here’s Trump warning NATO on this very issue >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O24rulfjA8U

  1. She did her job well . Dude , you are a bully . No need for confertation , just ask questions like a real reporter .

    1. For an American audience it was misleading, informed Europeans know about the investment in renewables and Germany’s attempt to cease nuclear power.
But it is normal to grill politicians here, not be deferential and just let them list their talking points.
What is amazing is EU officials are answering for things that were national policy decisions.

    2. This is what the US news has been missing, asking real tough questions like normal people, not cream puff questions so the official can bs their way around answering. This is the difference between news as a pillar of democracy, as apposed to news as a way to sell commercials.

  2. The German chancellor already announced that it would take a few years to reactivate the nuclear power stations and so nuclear power wasn’t an option because it just takes too long.

    1. I’m from Germany. There are LNG terminals in Europe and new pipelines are going to be built to supply more parts of Europe from there. In addition Germany is going to build 2 new big LNG terminals in Greifswald and Wilhelmshaven which will also be capable of accepting hydrogen in the future.

We could actually go by without russian oil for some time. In the 1970s, during the oil crises, we simply introduced no-car-days and petrol was rationed for essential services. We have a well developed public transport so that most Germans could go by without a car. Since we are too cowardish to establish a No-Fly-Zone we could help Ukraine this way.

And then we have coal which we will probably use longer than we originally anticipated. There was off course also the idea to let the nuclear power plants run longer then originally planned, but the russian attacks on nuclear power plants in Ukraine have raised security concerns. We aren’t that far away from Ukraine, russian missiles have the range to hit our nuclear power plants as well.

They have also eliminated all the red tape and bureaucracy in the installation of renewables. Germany will be plastered all over with solar panels and wind turbines. There is a new law which states that every single roof in Germany shall have solar panels. This measure alone will significantly reduce our energy dependence. The energetic modernization of houses and buildings with better insulation and heat-pumps will now probably also go in turbo-charger mode.

    3. @Mary Lamb Joe Biden is a good president. He’s the kind of president who can push Germany to do painful steps and who can unite America with its allies.

    4. @Piotr Trebisz

Germany did that on their own.

Biden is worthless, are you not paying attention, or just believing the lies of cnn/msnbc?

    1. They were warned. Tump spelled it out when he was president. There’s an entire video on it. He informed NATO face to face what was going to happen. And he also told them that why did you make a business deal with Russia for your natural gas ? When you did that Russia can hold you hostage…. They all laugh at him..

  3. I sincerely hope that the EU will not buy gas & oil from other authoritarian states such as the Saudis, etc. And I am saying this even though I live in The EU. I would rather walk than support these oil-rich criminal countries.

    1. Well the EU pushes the renewables to become more independent from those autocrats. I hope they follow through with that and we will only have to import small amounts for our industry in the future.

    2. At present, China’s role in the world is clown and witch. On the surface, China gets along well with the United States and Europe, helping Russia recover its economy behind the scenes, trying to establish a communist alliance against Western countries, publicizing against the United States in the world to bring trouble to the United States, China hates the United States better than Russia, anti-American propaganda for a hundred years, more than 95% of Chinese resent the United States, and the goal of the Chinese government is to replace the hegemony of the United States, not only to have influence in Asia, but also to have greater influence in the world.

  4. This reporter knows nothing about renewables and nuclear.
He thinks nuclear is easier to build up quickly than renewables, which is just the exact opposite. Up-scaling nuclear takes more time than renewables.
Renewables are also cheaper. The advantages of nuclear are that you don’t need energy storage and that it doesn’t require as many scarce materials. NOT speed or cost.

    1. @Ramschat Real reliable energy storage for renewables is a long way off yet. It’s like cutting off your foot because you can untie your shoe.

    2. @Bill Hilyard The reporter wasn’t saying that though, he was (falsely) claiming that nuclear power could be activated more quickly than renewables.

    3. @ImaginaryNumb3r I am not German so not following German news, but are they still planning to decommission their last 3 nuclear power plants this year?
I have heard the plants they decommissioned last year will take at least to next year to restart, but I have not heard anything about the plants currently in operation (unless I am misunderstanding which plants will be ready for next year if we so decided)

    4. @tjampman apparently the shutdown process has advanced to such a degree that keeping them online for a longer time would pose a “security risk”. But I am hesitant to believe this fully.

  5. If the war can be won then there will not be any immediate need for energy sanctions against Russia; so all immediate efforts should be made to assist Ukraine in the short term. In the LONG RUN Russia is not a reliable partner for energy at any price discount and other methods for energy must be implemented. But the long term security of Europe, a Europe that includes Ukraine, is for a wealthy, democratic and free Russian population and that will require trade with Europe in all sectors. Commissioner Simson has our gratitude for shouldering such a heavy burden.

    1. Russia was NEVER a reliable partner. For anything. It was an absolute dumb decision to make these deals in the first place after Putin came on the stage. It all boils down to not selling you’re principles for a cheap fart and making sure that you’re not heavily dependent on one scource. Same goes for China by the way. Europe needs to become selfsufficient in all basic elements. Then all this wouldn’t have been needed in the first place.

Hitler announce his intentions on the first page of Mein Kampf, Europe took no notice. Putin has also anounced in the late ’90 what his intentions were. Which we have been seeing played out over the years, ever since Chechnya and Georgia. It’s the same mistake all over again.

  6. Better – Tax the crap out of oil then give every citizen a stimulus check from the revenue to spend as they see fit. This will let the market find the alternatives without hurting the poor.

  7. Moving house in a couple of months (UK). First purchase = solar panels, 2nd purchase = electric car. I know neither are 100% efficient but I reckon at least 50% of our personal energy needs will be covered by sunlight and reduce my energy bills massively. Payback period around 11 years but don’t plan to move again. Personally I think the UK government should mandate all new houses be fitted with solar panels when being constructed. With the builders bulk purchasing power it would add less than 5% to the cost of a new house here.

  8. I had a broccoli and cheese quiche with a pint of milk for lunch, so I’m ready to supply Europe with all the natural gas it needs.

  9. In 10 years EV’s will be dominant so fuel won’t be needed nearly as much, energy will be increasing but I’m hoping for a much more greener side to that in 10 years time too. For now though, we will be riddled by inflation and price hikes as blow back from this chaos. My advice to anyone retiring this year is to brace for impact and Pray.

    1. keep buying gas like a sucker lol I bought an EV 6 yrs ago because I no longer want to be a prisoner to oil and gas companies lol

    2. Cathie wood called this an “economic apocalypse”, things will surely be getting crazier in the coming weeks.

    3. Electric is not that green anymore. Battery of electric bikes or cars needes more carbon that the gas ones. Electric is just a bum for people.

  10. If Europe are really serious about weaning of fossil fuels then the first thing they need to do is amend building regulations. They should make is compulsory that every new build must include both solar panels and heat pumps.

  11. I cycle to work. The easiest 40 minutes of my day to decide how to spend. This was already the case before Russia pulled their shenanigans; the signs were always there.

  12. If EU does this, Russia’s economy is going to regress to the USSR era as they have said the sanctions are not coming off till Putin is not the leader. Russia could have another 1917 Revolution again when people used a 2 generations used to expanding western comforts don’t have them as US/EU companies have pulled out.

  13. Energy storage can be a massive part of the switch away from gas & oil. It is key along with nuclear.

  14. The best way for us to help to reduce the severity of this crisis is to move toward implementing the 25th Amendment against Biden as soon as possible!
