This is a very important first step in providing Ukraine with weapons to take the offensive against Russian forces. Expect Russian spring offenses on all fronts including the border with Belarus in an attempt to overwhelm Ukrainian forces by sheer numbers. That has been the Russian tactic since WW II. They don’t care about the number of body bags they create. I just hope there are enough armored components in place to hold off the Russians into the Summer when the new Leopard tank battalions become activated. US Abrams tanks won’t see the battlefield until late Summer or Fall at the earliest. Pray for Ukraine that they can hold off these despicable attacks until western armor gives them the upper hand on the battlefield. Fighter aircraft should be next!

Yes these tanks will make Ukraine hit hard, but it will also make Russia hit harder, not the best diplomatic path, it does not mitigate the harm. Not only the death of their soldier but death of the Ukraine nation.
Maybe for the spring offensive get some South Korean SGR-A1 auto-turrets to just mow down the Russians as they try to advance in large numbers?

To put things in perspective, Ukraine had 176 ICBMs and over 2000 tactical nukes along with bombers able to carry them. They gave it all up in exchange for security guarantees from USA, UK and Russia ( Budapest Memorandum 1994 ). One would say that assisting Ukraine now when its being invaded should be obvious thing to do when you signed up on their security and they gave up literally thousands nukes…

Why send many young russian soldiers (who also speak Russian) to Ukraine to possibly be killed? Putin wants to obtain the Wheat, grain and fertilizers as well as the Salt and gypsum mines and other minerals, Gas and oil. Also if he keeps Crimea and all of the Ukrainian ports,he will have control over the Black sea shipping lanes. You are aware of this? These western tanks don’t have some magical “cheat code” that’s gonna stop them from blowing up from Russian artillery or anti tank weapons. They will blow up and burn just the same. This is gonna be quite shocking once we start seeing these western tanks getting blown up on social media.

Itโs not like the Ukrainians will be able to just hop into the German tanks and be able to use it to maximum capacity. Going to take a while to get them trained up. But I imagine at this point theyโre probably pretty good at figuring out foreign weapons systems.
I’d seen several years ago a really impressive documentary about tank school. It is on par with flight school, from requirements to be placed to the technological challenges they must master.

Yes, the Ukrainians have proven themselves very capable with Western advanced equipment. I assume those with MBT experience will be the first to go to school for the new tanks. Should be a quick learning curve. I also assume that those currently training for the F16 aircraft are already military or commercial pilots. Things are looking up. ๐
@Shane Painterย anyone can learn to drive a tank. It’s battle tactics that takes time. Coordination between ground troops, air and artillery support. Tactical maneuvers, proper positioning, communication with other armored vehicles. Then you get into advanced tactics. What type of ground you are traversing on. What ammunition you need to use (It’s more than just AP and HE). Calculating targets. How experienced is your loader, commander and gunner.

It’s impossible to overstate how important the last point made by Jen Stoltenberg is. If Putin/Russia wins this war it will be a tragedy for Ukraine but it will inevitably lead to a destabilization of Europe and indeed the whole world. Yes supporting Ukraine is the moral thing to do but the West benefits enormously from the heroic sacrifices being made by ordinary Ukrainians. It’s important to drive home that message to the populations of Western countries. The cost of helping Ukraine now is a pittance compared to the cost we would incur by having to fight a full scale war on the European continent against a belligerent Russia.

It’s true the Ukrainian tank crews will need training, but a good tank crew or truck driver-aircraft pilot- heavy equipment operator or a mechanic all can learn quickly to operate and maintain a different machine. There are many examples of Ukrainian civilians jumping into Russian equipment and driving away with it. And how much training did they get? Granted they did not go into battle with them as far as we know. Canada should send our leopard 2 tanks and stage our supply, repair and training efforts in Poland.
Ukraine is fighting for their lives, my prayers ๐ goes out to them.

Well this may not ‘initially’ add up to the 300 Zelensky wanted, it does start to add ‘up’ and with Abrams and Leopard 2’s sharing the same ammo, logistics issues are reduced. I think the Challenger 2 uses some of the same Ammo too that is ‘more’ accurate with the rifled barrel but can’t shoot certain ammo because its rifled but they have used tanks and IFV’s before in a ‘combined’ force so I don’t expect them to ‘struggle’ with western made gear – especially as they are supported by IFV’s sent to Ukraine and they all speak the ‘same’ language to co-ordinate effectively on the battlefield so I doubt it will matter where the tanks were made, they’ll integrate them in effectively – they seemed to grasp Hi-mars and M270’s well enough…

There are currently just over 2000 leopard 2a4 2A5 and 2A6 tanks in NATO countries hands at moment….. If all the pledges come in…they will get the 300 they want. Mostly 2A5ยดs. Germany is sending its 2A6 model. All deadly!

The Ukrainians need to be schooled in modern combined arms armor offensives. They should punch into the russian’s rear and kill the russian offensives by starving them and disrupting their rear. Expect alot of bodies. So sad. I hope the Ukrainians kick the C.R.A.P. out of the russians.

I like what he said at the end of the interview. Essentially he was saying is if countries like Russia succeed in taking Ukraine by force, then other countries will see this as a way to do the same thing. We need to supply them with military equipment so they can defend themselves so this doesn’t happen.

@Elbib Wen Who’s laughing? Putin and his Russian criminals? I don’t think so. Tanks are coming and so are the Ukrainians. If Putin is smart, he will cut his losses and stand down. Why sacrifice his mobilized civilians and put them in a “meat grinder” in an effort that has already been lost. It is over, but for the crying by the Russians and the cheering by the Ukrainians. The longer Putin persists in this losing effort, the more he stands to lose. Seeing how incredibly hard-headed the Russians are it will most likely take another year or two before they come to realize what everyone else already knows. The outcome is not in doubt. NATO and its allies are united and committed to the defense of Ukraine and victory by the Ukrainian freedom fighters in repelling the invaders/aggressors from their sovereign territory.
