Roseau, Dominica – September 7, 2009……… Dominica’s Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit says his Government is committed to the construction of additional hotel rooms in Dominica.
The Prime Minister made the announcement at the first in a new round of Town Hall Meetings in the village of Marigot recently.
The Prime Minister, who is also the Minister for Finance, said the soft loan of US$5.1 million received by Government from the International Monetary Fund under its Exogenous Shocks Facility will go towards the construction of hotel rooms in Dominica.
In addition, the Government of Dominica will approach the Chinese Government for a loan of US$60 million for the construction of a 200 room resort in Dominica.
“And this is why the Government has gone further and has approved for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ourselves and the Government of China to request a loan of about US$60 million to construct a 200 room resort here in Dominica, again to create sustainable jobs and create economic activity here for the people of Dominica,” the Prime Minister stated.
Hon. Skerrit also spoke of the efforts by his Government to get the Woodford Hill hotel project back on track. The project has been affected by financial difficulties.
The Government’s plans to build hotel rooms in Dominica is coming as night landing at the Melville Hall Airport is now only months away. The Government’s EC$110 million modernisation of the airport to include night landing is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
