A Senate plan to remove names of Confederate leaders on military assets has sharply divided Republicans — and has now put a GOP-led panel at odds with the White House at a time of a wide-ranging re-examination of race in the United States.
The amendment, offered by Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, calls for the removal of names of Confederate leaders from all military assets — whether it's a base, installation, facility, aircraft, ship, plane or type of equipment — within three years. The plan was adopted behind closed doors by voice vote with the support of some Republicans, even as President Donald Trump condemned any action to remove Confederate leaders' names from military bases — and the White House vowed to veto any such legislative effort.
"There is always a history that we don't want to forget," Sen. Mike Rounds, a South Dakota Republican who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said when asked about the plan, which he supports. "With regard to that I agree with the President that we don't want to forget our history. … But at the same time that doesn't mean that we should continue with those bases with the names of individuals who fought against our country."
The amendment comes at a precarious time for Trump, who has struggled to win support within the black community and has seen his poll numbers drop sharply amid his handling of both the coronavirus pandemic and the deep racial unrest caused by the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man killed while in Minneapolis police custody.

Being a veteran I think it’s time for change to remove the names of leaders who fought against America’s system of values. Since 9-11 we’ve lost many great soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airman whom names should be considered. There should be no black, no white, or no race other than the human race in America or the world. Each time I’ve raised my right hand to accept the oath read to me it was for every man, woman, and child in America. Also that oath was to uphold the Constitution not for the symbol of the flag because the Constitution is the foundation of America and it’s to support every American of birth right or through naturalization while the flag just symbolizes the country as every country has a flay, but not a Constitution!

Of course it can happen. Our current standard of today isn’t going to be what people think 50, 100, 200 years later. It’s just not shrug. Culture changes. Law changes. It’s kind of ironic a bit. You should go read why the supreme court found the civil rights act of 1875 unconstitutional.
I can’t speak for everyone in the south, but by that same token neither can you. I do know there were people that fought solely because their home was being attacked. Non political people that wanted to protect their family. Others thought the Something about states rights. Really big window of particular things there. And yes, there were some that supported slavery.
I would suggest you read some civil war era writings and journals. It’s honestly interesting to get a window into life that is so far removed from the life we live today.

That’s like saying the flag of South Sudan is a flag of the country of The Republic of Sudan. The confederate flag represents an independent nation from the USA, just one that happens to have occupied some of the same soil at a point in history.

@Solstice of Snow What mark is left by looking at a statue? People should look at the pictures with bodies strewn across the battlefield. Or the pictures of slaves with whip marks across their backs. Or the pics of people as they watched the Lincoln’s casket go by after his assassination. You can’t really look at a statue of Robert E Lee sitting proudly on his horse and have these things come to mind.
All you armchair historians need to learn history before you make such all-encompassing blanket statements like that. You didn’t live in those times, and I’m sure you would have been just as uninformed as damn near everybody else was at that time. There was MUCH MORE than just slavery that caused the civil war. Foremost of these was economic inequity. Not many people were building factories in the South for mass production of goods (which is why the South missed the boat industrially). But most of the food was grown in the south, and other products like cotton to make textiles and such.
