Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine Dr. Peter Hotez reflects on his concerns that Republicans and right-wing media figures who are just now coming out to support the vaccine, are too late to stop the spread of the Delta variant in red states across the country

Republicans decided that killing off their constituents wasn’t really a winning strategy anymore.
@Yupi23 Literally entirely 100% fully untrue and without merit. The only thing you’ve managed is correct spelling and grammar, literally every single other thing you’ve presented is flawed and without substance.
@Andy Lord Except a simple internet search shows that everything I just said is 100% true, and you simply cannot find it because you don’t want it to be true.
@Yupi23 No, I looked it up. Both things are simply 100% wrong. Literally every single thing you’ve said is meritless.
The 40% number you’re reporting are first dose, and people who’s immunity hasn’t developed yet (2 weeks after second shot). And they have much much better outcomes than unvaccinated. (also that was 3 weeks ago and is no longer the case)
Your Sydney comment is utterly bonkers. Only 13% of Aussies are vaccinated, and Aus. only has 2488 active cases in the whole country. 99% breakthrough in one city with only 1% unvaccinated getting infected is nonsensical.
@Fiona Bologna 1% of 380 million is 3.8 million people. How about those that need hospitalization?
@Fiona Bologna – Fortunately we don’t use dead people to vote. Look at all the found cases (all like 3 of them in this last election), all republican. But keep believing in the 1000’s of zombie votes with no evidence.
It’s a pandemic of willful ignorance.
@AwakeAmericanow. — Why? From the standpoint of systems dynamics, that aspect of U.S. political culture (extreme emphasis on personal freedom and freedom-of-choice inherent in our social contract) that was greatly responsible for the economic success of America and its rise, regularly causes massive negative feedback loops at the very worst time and will ultimately be our undoing. You could ask this same question and get the exact same answer every time you see another mass shooting in the U.S. It’s another manifestation of the same thing. You can also point to the ongoing destruction of our public school system and the general illiteracy of Americans with regard to U.S. history and civics. Finally, there has always been a particularly virulent strain of dangerous populism in the U.S. — the idea that the opinion of an ignorant, average Joe should somehow be considered just as legitimate as that of a credible expert and that government experts, in particular, are not to be trusted. In fact, that anti-intellectual populism is what caused the political rise of Trump in the first place A gigantic portion of America saw Trump, his stupidity, his incompetence, his grotesque racism, and his xenophobia as somehow validating of their own qualities. They got “a leader like themselves.” And all of us in the U.S. got the leader we deserved because our electoral college system discounts the popular vote.
@Denise Kulawik.Yes you could say that. You have assessed how many of America’s problems are home grown. I would say that they metastasise more easily in an environment of excessive hubris and greed.
@Craig — Then, for God’s sake, if you wind up with COVID, at least try and act like a man and don’t present yourself, blubbering, to your local emergency room begging to be saved. But I suppose that’s too much to ask. Any selfish child who fears taking a vaccine designed to protect him and for which there is ample evidence that it is both reasonably safe and effective, is more than likely to pee himself when it’s time to meet his maker.
@AwakeAmericanow. — I suppose you have a point. Certainly, hubris is an inherent part of anti-intellectualism. But greed? I see no direct or necessary connection. Greedy people aren’t necessarily stupid. They’re just rapacious. A smart greedy person practices “enlightened self-interest” and would see containing the virus as necessary to opening the economy. In fact, greed has actually played a useful role. Republicans are starting to relent in great part due to the influence of Wall Street and market response to the continued crisis and its current trajectory. I suppose your point on greed is relevant if one is referring to Facebook and Fox, promulgating dangerous disinformation. But that doesn’t explain the behavior of Americans who are willing to listen to them.
@Denise Kulawik .The greed Denise, is of the system. More is better. Especially money. When good people are disrespected, on the bottom line of a balance sheet, as no more worthy than the grommets or the widgets they make there will be consequences. You know as well as I that the reasonably well paid, low skilled jobs of yesterday have gone. The skilled jobs of today will soon disappear also, but that is part of a separate issue. Other countries did better. Here for instance in the U.K. I have access to health care for me and my family with no out of pocket expenses. There are retraining programs, financial and family support. It is far from perfect. But poverty is not necessarily blamed onto the impoverished and called freedom. Trump’s base was ready and waiting for him. Scores of millions of undereducated people resentful of a system which had simply dumped them despite the promises and the hard work. Of course they fell for the big and better promises of the non politician, the rhetoric and slogans. With the red hats they were suddenly a cohesive political force. They loved the fool and always will. Who can blame them? The greed of the wealthy and their enablers in politics has been a major player in the current problems which America has to deal with. It will be interesting to see if democracy and the rule of law prevails or whether the sideways lurch from Oligarchy to full blown Autocracy continues. If nothing else DJT has shown how easily it can be done.
Over 600,000 lost souls… That’s quite a learning curve.
As a non American it boggles my mind that an ex-president, a powerful and influential person is allowed to spread a lie which is causing a serious social division and is undermining social order. All civilised countries have laws to protect public order. Why are we not seeing them in America?.As a non-American why should I care? Because the reality is that a major civil event in America would negatively affect the global economy and cause a set back at a time when it is least needed.
imagine if the man wouldnt have eatin a bat 🤣🤣 if thats what u actually believe! democrats created a virus in a lab and now wanna force u to get a vaccine, u accepted communism because u are weak and pathetic
@AwakeAmericanow. You would have to prove his claims as a lie. There are over 200 court cases involving massive fruad during the 2020 election.
I hate to say it, but the evidence in these cases are pretty damning for us.
@William SpringerIt might surprise you to know that there are many international news agencies, on the ground and reporting events in America without the political baggage if the domestic agencies CNN FOX etc, As a non-American the reports I read are from the likes of Reuters, Al Jazeera, BBC, They report that all the cases you cite were thrown out for lack of evidence. I know that America is earning a reputation for the land of wild conspiracy theories. You might come back and say that the legal system in America is corrupt and conspiring to do the will of the ‘deep state’ or something equally wild. If so, it then follows that America and it’s institutions, which the world has always admired, has now sunk to a level of corruption a few grades lower than Afghanistan on a bad day.
@Yolanda Denny Yep, let them die.
Is that the words on the Republican tomb stone ? Too Little, Too Late.
“It told you I was sick”… Henny Youngman’s tombstone… (Vaudeville comedian)
or how about that California dude who said i got 99 problem and covid isn’t one of them. only to die 2 weeks later of covid.
or “I died, but I never believed the science.”
Fox News and the GOP…
ran the numbers and realized…
that at the current rate of loss of their base…
they couldn’t win the upcoming midterms…
In all fairness, most of the anti-vaxxers I come across are liberals who don’t trust big pharma or big bother, particularly since Trump was responsible for the vaccine. I support their right to choose.
If Donald Trump says we should take the vaccine, I’m not taking it” -Kamala Harris
Kinda wondering how many people she killed with that statement.
@TruthSeeker08 good question. She should be investigated for her dangerous misinformation that is literally killing people.
@Bryan 👈 danger to our country
@Bryan 48% of republicans are vaccinated, 85% of democrats are vaccinated.
If finally dawned on the GOP, this part of the big lie was gonna cost them votes.
Literally!
Nobody ever accused the GOP of being comprised of bright minds.
@kataratify 😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆
So you think them not taking the vaccine gives you full rights to steal from people?
Cause if they pay taxes, they have every right to that bed.
@Bryan It takes a little bit of intelligence to tell the difference between liberal and libertarian. It is confusing to the simplistic minds of the greedy.
@William Springer 🤡
I’m sorry the GQP changed their mind! I was hoping to see less GQP zombies voting in 2022.
I wish Biden would just call it like it is … that it got to this point because Trump is a malignant narcissist who saw COVID as a personal attack against him.
He has enough to do, the Lincoln Project is doing an excellent job and they are a conservative group. Check out their channel it’s genius, and they have addressed the virus in their videos a couple of times. Most are about a minute long and they make excellent points in a minute or so of video time. And we know Trump has seen them because he has made nasty comments about their videos
Anyone who has been paying attention and does not know that about Trump already is probably beyond hope, so why bother.
@Penelope “Everything tRump touches dies”
Trump is responsible. For 500k deaths. That doesn’t consider all the long haulers. He needs to be treated like the war criminal he is.
Seriously, Biden can’t “call it like it is” unless he can find his notecard that day!” That poor man has dementia! Whoever is writing his script should be ashamed of taking advantage of a vulnerable adult. That said, all these socialists are trying so hard to instill fear in the American people using COVID which was a manufactured virus. Not sure how people can be so blind to all this. I would encourage you to do your own research, not just get facts off fake news or facebook
Ignorance kills. Yes I’m talking to the red hats.
Obstinance kills just as effectively.
Folks:You can’t fix stupid…
Covid-19: I can…
I think it was indifference and hate.
Garden gnomes?
…and those hats are made in China.
So they finally realized that hundreds of thousands of dead Republicans could actually change elections.
@William Springer What number of deaths is needed to make you call anything massdeath?
@martin winther Do you believe anything on the internet? Those republicans and trollers tell the the most stupid things.
@Patriotz Finder I do not believe in everything I see on the web.
What makes you ask that?
@martin winther Some people believe everything. Anyway have a nice day.
@Patriotz Finder Ik – Be open for new things, but dont swallow everything you see. –
You to. Have a good one
This is like closing the barn door after the horse got out, ran down the road, ran down the high way, got hit by truck, got cleaned up by animal control, and is now in a tube labeled glue.
Some of the side-effects that may be associated with ivermectin include skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, facial or limb swelling, neurologic adverse events (dizziness, seizures, confusion), sudden drop in blood pressure, severe skin rash potentially requiring hospitalization and liver injury (hepatitis). Laboratory test abnormalities include decrease in white cell count and elevated liver tests. Any use of ivermectin for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 should be avoided as its benefits and safety for these purposes have not been established. Data from clinical trials are necessary for us to determine whether ivermectin is safe and effective in treating or preventing COVID-19.
@Robert Lussier Wow! The anti-ivermectin brigade is certainly on the ball! Must be using some pretty sophisticated (search/software) tools to be able to respond to a random pro-ivermectin comment just 13 minutes after it was posted! How about using your internet skills to compare the actual adverse events reported for ivermectin over it’s 35 years of use to the adverse events reported for the vaccines in just the past six months?
I won’t hold my breath waiting for a response to that.
You could search this paper, from Jan. This year, but I doubt you will.
“Serious adverse reactions associated with ivermectin: A systematic pharmacovigilance study in sub-Saharan Africa and in the rest of the World”
@Robert Lussier Nah! I’d rather go with the information the WHO was putting out before ivermectin became “the bad guy”, back in the days when it was still “the good guy”! From the Bulletin of the World Health Organization | August 2004, an editorial titled: “Mass treatment with ivermectin: an underutilized public health strategy” comes the following:
“Since ivermectin’s use in the human field, adverse reactions occurred in 50% or more of the population (7) and ivermectin was “tainted” with a high adverse reaction profile, despite evidence that the majority of such reactions were attributable to the interaction between the drug and the disease, not to the drug itself (8). A number of follow-up studies have found that inadvertent filariasis mass campaign use of ivermectin during pregnancy has not been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes or negative effects on pregnant women or their offspring (9). The lack of serious adverse events found in the study reported by Heukelbach et al. is reassuring, as the low incidence of minor adverse events fell from 14% after the initial treatment to 5% 10 days later.”
So, for sixteen years after that was published the WHO continued to carry out mass administration of the drug issuing more than a billion doses (3.8 billion total up to 2020) but, come 2020 it’s safety is being put into question? WTF? Somethings fishy and you know it. Can’t blame you for doing your job!
Ya don’t want that already dead horse to get out…
What a failure of not only intelligence but empathy.
600,000+ deaths of your fellows wasn’t enough for you? But when YOU get sick or someone close to YOU dies, suddenly you see the light???
In 2001, about 3,000 Americans died in the 9/11 attack, and they all went “Never Forget.” and they went halfway across the world to declare war without going to the proper channels …
In 2012, exactly four (4) Americans died in the Benghazi attack and they were so mad that they called for the heads of people in charge to be decapitated and put on a pike …
In the recent global covid19 pandemic, over 600,000 Americans (and still counting) have died and they all went, “Not Enough Americans have died!”
They’re a very weird bunch.
@Owen Rona It would be accurate to call them the Hypocrite Party.
@Owen Rona — Big thumbs up. But, somehow, “very weird” just doesn’t capture it, does it? I’m not sure any language captures the perfect storm of ignorance, rank stupidity, arrogance, delusion, and sociopathy that seems to make up the psychological profile of the anti-vax crowd. One almost needs new words to capture their essence.
GOP…WE NEED TO SIDE WITH ANTI MASKERS TO KEEP THEIR VOTE!!! GOP(3 MONTHS LATER)…ALL OUR VOTERS ARE GETTING INFECTED AND DYING, WE’RE LOSING VOTES!!!
I don’t buy that Republicans care about their constituents dying.
Just look at the stock market last month. It’s all about money for them.
@Yamaha R6 Your comment about Covid being symptomless is stupid and you know it. Obviously, you don’t really think that people are showing up at hospitals because they feel fine.
3 months???
You mean almost a year and a half later. We have been dealing with Anti Maskers and anti Maskers since a year ago Jan./Feb.
It’s only been the last 6 weeks that GOP leaders have been changing their tune.
And we still have deniers out there still being rude Karen’s about wearing mask etc.
@Yamaha R6 Imagine being a TROLL just to argue with people.
Oh I guess you dont have to imagine.
When adults get up in front of a TV camera to claim the the vaccine made them magnetic while making a “BRASS” key to stick to their unwashed face, you can tell that no amount of education can fix this mass stupidity.
@charles henson so would being able to charge people to use you as a 5G hotspot.
Thanks for the laugh. Thinking of that fool trying to get the key to stick!
Is this true?! I haven’t heard about this. Can I view it anywhere? Thanks
@anne moncrieff Yes, search “Tenpenny” she is the person who is spreading this “Metallic Vaccine” and 5G Crap. Truly a Dangerous Person.
once i watched idiocracy and i thought boy that is very far fetched but hey we are at idiocracy on steroids
They’re realizing dead people really can’t vote.
@AwakeAmericanow. Sadly you are partially right. However, the GOP is not the one spreading lies. The GOP is not by any means, ” guilt free”; however, these socialists, who are now in power, will stop at nothing to destroy America “from within.” Trump is a true patriot.
@Jennifer Smith There is zero evidence that immigrants have been spreading covid, it does feed into the age old white supremacist trope of “all immigrants are dirty” though.
Trump has a closer relationships with China, with his Bank accounts and his multitude of patents, he and his family have been importing from them for years
@Jennifer Smith you really should try it, it’s not that funny but all your claims just disappear pffft.
@Jennifer Smith 1 vote doesn’t change an election but just for the fun of it here’s some facts….
Voter ID fraud between 2000 and 2014, 31 people were caught impersonating someone.
The heritage foundation has found around 1,800 fraudulent votes from 1980s to 2019, even if all those votes were cast in 1 election they wouldn’t change the outcome. The reason the heritage foundation knows about these votes is because the people were caught! Voter fraud is as rare as Trump telling the truth, only a few idiots would be stupid enough to commit voter fraud. It’s a none issue
@Kim Georgiana Today we saw the start of the investigation into the events of 01/06/21. The testimony of the police officers, the videos, the words of those trying to downplay those horrible events are seen and heard in all counties around the world. I am watching in the U.K. The world knows that the lowlife who carried out these actions were trying to please the deluded ambitions of one man. There should be a price to be paid.
Well since we’re being forced to pick one:
Science > Republicans
@David Clark there is no evidence to back your claims.
@William Springer well then your ok aren’t you…if you don’t want to be vaccinated then that’s you and i don’t care if you are or not….but trumplicans have been screaming about crap without evidence constantly and you think that they have…this tells me all i need to know
@David Clark I know the TRUTH shakes you to your core. You are worried now that the media is ONCE AGAIN lying to you about being safe. You are NOT safe. And the stories are out there. You just don’t want to look.
@Yupi23 oh yeah I’m safe…and nothing scares me…i quit being afraid in 1993…haven’t been afraid since…because fear profits a man nothing
@William Springer i have all the evidence i need….I’m not in the hospital….and I’m not sick…that’s all i need…vaccinate ….don’t procrastinate
On the topic of schools… it’s not just the students’ health at stake, it’s the staff.
And the parents, grandparents and siblings at home.
Except that the staff is medicated, with a supposed vaccine, that is supposedly effective.
Although, if that were true, the staff wouldn’t be a concern.
If the staff is vaccinated then they should be safe. Your logic is ignorant.
GOP changing their tune? They have always been off key.
and usually singing the wrong lyrics anyway.
This probably isn’t about life, but having enough voters to remain competitive
My thoughts too. Trump et al so thick they now realise only their voter base was listening to them and not taking vaccine and then dying. Oh dear!
👌🏾
Your right on the head of it Ryan 💯%👍👍
Who would have thought pro disease, anti science, anti intellect would turn off a lot of independent voters
Parents who love the cult more than their own children are slugs who don’t deserve children..
Preeeeeeeeach!!!!
