Germany's BfV domestic intelligence service has formally placed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) under surveillance on suspicion of trying to undermine Germany's democratic constitution, a person briefed on the move said. Four years after becoming the first avowedly anti-immigrant party to enter the German parliament, the AfD now becomes the first party to be monitored in this way since the Nazi era ended in 1945.

Now, you see, they aren’t the main opposition party. They are the biggest but don’t dictate the direction of the opposition, instead preferring to not work at all and be opposed to all other parties. The three other opposition parties are way more significant in the political discourse.
Oh, and polling indicates that the Afd will be far less powerful in this election; their extremist tendencies have mostly surfaced after the last election and hurt them in the polls, at least in Western Germany.

It isn’t the first post-WW2 party to get monitored though. The NPD and other ultra right wing parties (who are trying to hide way less what their political intentions are) have been under surveillance for decades. And the first party to be banned was the SRP all the way back in the early 50s. I’m not quite sure how you managed to miss all that in your research.

@Chukiri The NPD once got 10% in one of the BRD states. 2004 they got 9,2% in saxony, in some towns 20%. Of course those are now AfD strongholds. Although the AfD says in their papers they dont want former NPD personal but they do not really ask for that.

They bring the the believes in family to an ultra level. A level which is grounded in the subtext of the conservative message. As we calling them far-right-movement it should be a chance to self-reflect. It is a bit like the catholic-priests who abuse children. @H F Natürlich hatten wir es nicht mit einer absolut homogenen Gesellschaft zu tun, denn das ist generell nicht möglich – in keinem Land. Aber die AfD hat diese Heterogenität – wie Trump und GOP und generell alle Populisten weltweit – instrumentalisiert und bewusst einen Spaltkeil hineingetrieben. –
Anti-Intellektualismus bedeutet Negierung von Expertentum. Das bedeutet Infragestellung von Expertenmeinungen wie z.B. denen von Ärzten (wie z.B. bei Impfgegnern) von Klimaforschern (wie z.B. bei den sog. Klimaleugnern) bis hin zu Journalisten (Lügenpresse). Diese “Elitenschelte” bezweckt vor allem, grundlegende Zweifel an der Meinungshoheit der akademischen Eliten zu streuen und dafür eine eigene, “alternative” Meinungshoheit aufzubauen. Dabei haben wir in Deutschland Glück gehabt, dass die AfD ausnahmsweise nur zögernd den Aussagen Trumps folgte, denn sonst würden wir hier ähnlich absurde Verhaltensweisen wie in den USA mit Masken- und Abstandsgegnern erleben und hätten wahrscheinlich mehr als 50% mehr Tote zu beklagen.
Ich möchte bezweifeln, dass “Frau nicht rechts sein darf”, dazu habe ich zu viele Frauen bei Pegida und in der AfD gesehen. Aber der feministische Diskurs ist natürlich vor allem ein akademischer Diskurs und dort finden sie de facto kaum “rechte” Denkweisen. Das hat sich letztlich auf das gesamte moderne Frauenbild ausgewirkt und damit kann auch ich zumTeil wenig bis nichts anfangen, da ich nicht gerne mein offensichtlich männliches Geschlecht bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verleugnen möchte.
Ich möchte mich als durchaus patriotisch bezeichnen, aber ich bin mir des Ungeistes unserer Vergangenheit immer bewusst gewesen und habe mich immer offen gegen ähnliche Entwicklungen gestellt, eben weil ich patriotisch bin und mir das Beste für unser Land wünsche. Und in diesem Kontext komme ich zurück zu der Frage, ob Sie nicht auch zu viele Parallelen zwischen Adolfs Vorgehen und Aufstieg und der AfD sehen? Mir sind es schlichtweg zu viele Parallelen, als dass ich glauben könnte, dass es sich um Zufälle handeln könnte. Und der “Flügel” der AfD ist derartig neonazistisch, dass es für mich auf die gesamte Partei abfärben muss. Gauland nannte Höcke einen “Nationalromantiker” oder so ähnlich. Haben Sie Höckes Rede in Dresden gesehen, wo er über das “Denkmal der Schande” (in Berlin) sprach? Haben Sie die Zuhörer und deren Reaktionen gesehen? Ich dachte mir bei dem Anblick: Ja, genauso muss es damals in den 20-er Jahren bei den Nazis gewesen sei. Es war einfach widerlich – die Rede, die Zuhörer und deren Reaktionen.

Nein, denn die Leute die ich kenne verstehen Anti-Intellektualismus eben nicht als Wissenschaftsabweisend, sondern als ein einige Denker wieder auf den Boden der erlebten Tatsachen zurückholen. Was einige sehr nötig haben.
Corona ist ein riesiges Problem, stimmt. Die Idee, allen die grundsätzlich unzufrieden sind und kein Parteiliches Sprachrohr haben aufzufangen hat sich hier als äußerst schwierig erwiesen.
Das ich nicht rechts sein sollte, weil ich Frau, jung, Studentin, Queer, Klimabewusst und links erzogen bin, mit Migranten aufgewachsen, ist nicht rechtes, sondern linkes Weltbild. Da passe ich definitiv nicht rein. Wenn es nach dem gehen würde, dann wären alle AfDler 60+-, auch wenn dies die Wählergruppe ist, in der die AfD schon immer die geringste Zustimmung erfährt.
Die Rede hatte ich mir nicht (vollständig) angeschaut, das habe ich in der vollständigsten Version die ich finden konnte grade gemacht.
Sie ist sicher eine Provokation, nicht unbedingt eine Gelungene.
Ich finde es stimmt, dass eben das Gedenken an den NS wichtig ist, aber ich kann einem Teil der Erinnerungskultur nicht zustimmen. Denn es gibt diese Art, des wir gehen damit um indem wir sagen das Deutschland schlecht ist und wir uns irgendwie offener Verhalten müssen als wir es von anderen Ländern verlangen (zb. Japan). Ich persönlich habe mir die Menschenrechte als Grundlage gegeben und denke das ist sinnvoll. Natürlich muss ich aber auch in meiner Bewegung hierfür eintreten.
Der Vergleich der Bombardierung mit dem Abwurf der Atombombe ist gänzlich daneben.
Höcke hat im Allgemeinen die Idee, dass er diesen Teil der Erinnerungskultur irgendwie mit einer Änderung der Sprache usw. ändern kann. Was er als Grund für die ständigen Provokationen anführt. Tatsächlich halte ich das für misslungen und bemängle auch ein wenig, dass er eben auch sich selbst kein anderes gibt, mit dem der eine nicht-Wiederholung sicherstellt.
Mit Gauland verhält es sich ähnlich und wieder, ich stimme ihnen auch zu das diese Erinnerungskultur wie sie eben ist mich stört, aber ja, ohne eine andere Basis ist dies auch nicht einfach wegzureden.
In Bezug auf die Beobachtung des Verfassungsschutzes ergibt sich aber das Problem, dass der Flügel aufgelöst ist und sich auch sonst Fehler in seiner Behandlung vom Verfassungsschutz ergeben.
In Hessen zb. wurde jetzt durchgeklagt, dass der Verfassungsschutz nicht einfach die Mitgliederzahlen vom Flügel ohne jede Fakten Grundlage schätzen darf.
Ich finde so was unmöglich und politisierend, weil ich es so sehe, dass es dem Verfassungsschutz darum geht die Sperre, dies nicht im Superwahljahr machen zu können, zu umgehen.
Dementsprechend finde ich den Mangel dessen, dass dies oder eben das Berliner Gutachten niemanden interessieren, außer dass die Personen die diese geleakt haben verurteilt werden nicht gut.

Ganz ehrlich- ich finde auch vieles aus der akademischen Geisteswissenschaft daneben, ganz besonders die “politische Korrektheit”. Aber deshalb maße ich mir nicht an, Experten aus medizinischen, naturwissenschaftlichen oder anderen faktenbasierten Bereichen so vehement anzuzweifeln wie die AfD es tut. Sie nimmt eben gerade diese kontroversen Themen wie Genderismus etc. als pars pro toto und viele schlichte Gemüter folgen ihr. Und am Ende kommen derartige Pauschalaburteilungen dabei heraus wie die der Impfgegner, Coronaleugner, Maskenverweigerer, Klimaleugner, Homeschooling-Fanatiker etc. – Hier werden eben nicht nur einige verirrte Akademiker explizit kritisiert, sondern es wird ganz pauschal die akademische Expertise infrage gestellt und damit kann kein Staat funktionieren. Außerdem kann ich es auch als einen Baustein aus Adolfs-Kochbuch zum Erfolg werten, denn auch er hat sich 3 Gebiete bewusst ausgesucht, die er vehement angriff und letztlich ausschaltete: die Medien, die Kunst und die Wissenschaft. Und soweit ich weiß, gilt die pauschale Elitenschelte immer noch als pobates Agitationssubjekt innerhalb des AfD-Sprechs.
Bei Höckes Rede waren mir vor allem die Reaktionen der Zuhörer aufgefallen – ekelerregend. Ja, dachte ich, so muss es in den 20-er Jahren gewesen sein, wenn ein Nazi-Einpeitscher sein Publikum radikalisieren wollte. Über Höcke ist sowieso nichts Neues mehr zu sagen, aber seine Wirkung auf einige “treudeutsche Männer” ist doch erschreckend und besorgniserregend. Und ob der Flügel nun noch existiert oder nicht – Höcke ist immer noch Parteimitglied. Fühlen Sie sich in dessen Nähe wirklich wohl?

Und Gauland ist in meinen Augen ein Ewig-Gestriger mit lauter Lösungsvorschlägen von gestern und natürich ein Verharmloser. Frau von Storch sollte einen Gang zum Psychiater antreten und Frau Weidel macht in der Regel genau das Gegenteil von dem, was sie predigt. Wie kann man diese Partei und ihre Spitze nur besser als andere Parteien finden? Und dann noch deren “Tätigkeit” im Bundestag. Außer Provokationen habe ich bislang nichts Konstuktives von ihnen vernommen.
Natürlich bieten alle Parteien inhaltliche Angriffspunkte und z.T. fragwürdiges Personal, aber im Vergleich zur AfD kommen sie mir überdurchschnittlich kompetent und vor allem frei von Neonazis vor. Es war noch nie einfach, seine Stimme für eine Partei abzugeben und das gilt für alle demokratischen Länder – mit Ausnahme der USA bei den beiden letzten beiden Wahlen.

@Susan Teeter Actually Germany has a proportional system, meaning the percentage of votes corresponds to the percentage of seats a party gets. Germany has three left wing parties in the Bundestag though (SPD, Linke, Grüne), of which one (the SPD) is part of the government. The comment references the “Linke” party, which got 4.3 Million votes (9.2%), while the AFD got 5.9 Million votes (12.6%).

President Barack Obama knew of the organization’s spying on German Chancellor Angela Merkel – and approved of the efforts, a National Security Agency official has reportedly told a German newspaper.
According to the Associated Press, Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich was quoted Sunday as telling newspaper Bild am Sonntag he wants “complete information on all accusations” and that “if the Americans intercepted cellphones in Germany, they broke German law on German soil.” He added wiretapping is a crime and “those responsible must be held accountable.”
The Der Spiegel report also alleges the German leader’s mobile phone number had been part of a special surveillance list used by the NSA as late as this past June. Der Spiegel writes the nature of the alleged monitoring isn’t clear, or whether Merkel’s conversations were recorded or her contacts scrutinized.
