George Santos reacts to accusation that he orchestrated credit card skimming scheme

Embattled Rep. George Santos said on Friday that he was “innocent” of an allegation that he had orchestrated a credit card skimming operation in 2017 in Seattle that led to the guilty plea and deportation of a Brazilian man.
“Innocent,” the New York Republican told reporters on Capitol Hill. “Never did anything of criminal activity, and I have no mastermind event.”
His denials came a day after Politico published a sworn statement that the publication said Gustavo Ribeiro Trelha had submitted this week to the FBI and other federal law enforcement officials, alleging that Santos had overseen the skimming operation. 1. This makes no sense. He’s proven himself an habitual liar, so why should we believe anything he says?!

  1. If you fail at everything you try in life, at least you can always become a republican congressman, and if in doubt just ask George Santos ..🤣👍

    1. If you fail at everything you try in life, then BASE jumping is not for you. Politics, on the other hand, is perfect, if you can convince your party’s _base_ that you are one of them.

(This is popular among Republicans right now, but over the years, both parties have had similar issues.)

    1. If you do not think Trump will be taking him behind the wood shed for a good whooping for that, you would be sadly mistaken.

  3. Wait…Did he commit perjury in front of a judge???? He did not work for Goldman Sachs but testified to a judge he did.

    1. @Doug He was there as a character witness on behalf of his friend..So his lie would seem to be material to me because I’m sure the judge would base his decision on the people speaking up for him..At least that’s my take on character witnesses.

    1. I can’t think of any. Not that we _know_ he hasn’t committed.

(Ok, thinking about it further, they say that un-aliving yourself is a crime in some places. He hasn’t done that one. He still might, when he realizes that everything really is crashing down and he’s headed to prison.)

    1. and it doesn’t just stop with this guy, either. Have you seen the video with the guy listing all the crimes and offenses of congressmen? A 5th of them have DUIs, half of them have been bankrupted at least once— and on and on

    2. I feel certain it’s going to be a decade from now and Santos’ name will still pop up occasionally with something else they found that he’s accused of doing.

  4. Please have some sympathy for George, he was under much stress after the death of his mother for the third time.

  5. Santos has broken so many laws it is just staggering. When he told the judge (under oath) that he worked for Goldman Sacks by responding “Yup.” He perjured himself without the blink of an eye. He could be jailed for that one offense, right there and then. His problem is that he doesn’t know the difference between the truth and lying anymore…maybe he never did.

    1. Yes he has , but nothing will happen to him , he’s a republican, they need his votes 🗳️!!!! They have to make the other American party !!!!

  6. Sad frustrating part is that it takes forever to hold them accountable. If that ever happens. Very dysfunctional legal system for people in power.

To my knowing this is a pretty new case, so they are probably still collecting evidence. When it’s a high-profile case, and a large part of the population is waiting for a reason to accuse the legal system of political witch-hunt or bias, it’s better to show everybody that the investigation is thorough, and that everything is done by the book.

  7. Boggles my mind that someone can run for an election and not be background checked by any federal agency before they’re elected and put into office. If I were to apply for the FBI I’d have to provide names of friends back to elementary school. They’d interview them as well as my family and employers before I’d even be considered a potential candidate. Just bizarre

    1. You would expect that his democratic opponents would have dug this up during the race. All it would have taken was a single call to the college he supposedly graduated from. Fast food shops do better background checks than the New York democratic party. Truly an unforgivable lapse in both parties.

    2. Pfftt..you’re missing something obvious here. He was background checked and the Rs wanted him. His lies made for a very appealing candidate to beat out a mundane nice-guy Democrat.

    3. @Randy Mi He was background checked. The Republican Party in his district joked about him as “Scamtos”.

    1. As we see more and more, many reps + fox people tell things in public and very different stuff in court…

  8. America is currently plagued by the hydra-headed evil duo of inflation and recession. The worst part about this recession is that consumers are racking up credit card debt. In April alone, credit card debt went up 20% while rates have doubled in a year. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse has indeed begun..

    1. @Jeanieologist I’m surprised you haven’t objected to use of the term “recession” here. That has a very specific definition, and it does not fit the current economic situation.
