Absolutely it could be used for nefarious purposes (not like the government can’t already access this information if it chooses to do so, see the snowden leaks). Heck here you are making political statements on a service run by Google, the world’s largest aggregator of information but somehow because they’re “provate” you’re comfortable doing so? (Google has worked with China and other authoritarian regimes in the past to censor information. No reason to think they’re not sharing their massive spreadsheet on you with the government). But there’s no reason it couldn’t be kept secure and destroyed after use for it’s intended purpose same as all the other contact tracing.
If you start by assuming the government is evil and work backwards everything will look nefarious. Doesn’t make it true.
China simply followed what was written in the textbook about how to deal with pandemics. Literally every country should have done the same thing in the very beginning of the pandemic if following the advice of the health experts.

Exactly. We need a democracy day. Once a year, a mandatory holiday for *everyone* (except volunteers for voting) and we go to vote on specific policy proposals. We are living under a system that went out of date long ago when voting was pretty difficult for most.
So much fear from so little devastation, one could argue the most significant devastation has thus far come as a result of an overreaction.

@TG7 From all the numbers we can get from other countries, especially those who didn’t do a full lockdown, that “many” lives lost you’re talking about is very likely to be lower than the number of lives we’ll lose from suicide due to recession and mass unemployment causing widespread depression. The virus is only deadly to a small subset of the population, yet instead of a quarantine for those who are at risk, we go into a nationwide house arrest for everyone, effectively making matters worse at no gain. We will be getting a second wave when we finally release this stupid lockdown and we’ll most likely end up with the same amount of death from Covid-19 as if we hadn’t lockdowned at all and only quarantined the vulnerable.

Except, no, because we’ve had time to increase our ventilator stockpiles and PPE for medical professionals so hospitals don’t get overwhelmed.
Suicides from economic hardship is an absolutely real issue. One that could easily and effectively be solved through a Universal Basic Income. We have the greatest GDP per capita than we ever had yet the common person is struggling while wealth is concentrated into the hands of the few despite being the fruits of other’s labour.
THAT is the issue you should be raising a fuss over and protesting.
Not a classic response to an outbreak that’s effectively followed the textbook advice going back since we discovered germ theory.

You say “contact tracing” I say “surveillance state”.
@Jon K You’re half-right. There is a small minority of Canadians who control a majority of the wealth. THEY aren’t being taxed enough. I doubt you’re one of them.
And who says it’ll be liberals? Healthcare is handled on the provincial level, and I highly doubt that there will be an ideological test to sign up. It’ll likely be done largely by medical interns and those with some form of medical training like transcriptionists.
All Doug is calling for is a National Strategy, and some Federal funding to get the ball rolling. They’re the ones with the ability to literally print money after all.

Without contact tracing and knowing where community transmission is happening easing up on social distancing will absolutely result in a second wave making our efforts to this point for naught.
@Paul K The testing they are doing is inconclusive. Testing for antibodies does NOT tell you if you have corona, it tells you your body is fighting SOMETHING, POSSIBLY COVID, BUT INCONCLUSIVE. So really, who gives a fk what their numbers are, THEY ARE INCONCLUSIVE.

Such a negative and misleading title; “Ford calls out Ottawa”. He just said there needs to be a national plan for contact tracing and for provinces and territories to work with the feds on that.
