Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is on a mission to overhaul how race and LGBTQ issues are discussed in public schools. After gaining ground with conservative parents through his opposition to masks, DeSantis has passed new laws that mandate how teachers can discuss sexual orientation and the history of slavery. The bills have sparked a political firestorm and engaged right wing power players from the Proud Boys to Michael Flynn. Parents on all sides are furious – making the public comment period at school board meetings partisan free-for-alls. It’s a conservative movement that started in Florida but spread to school boards across the nation.
