I wonder how a medical system maximized for the best health outcomes differs from a health care system designed to maximize profit.
A lot! I’m dying from the side effects of an UCSF surgery (open laparotomy) based on a misdiagnosis, and stuck in diagnostic algorithms.
Good question.
The current crisis certainly shows the difference. In Canada, the COVID death rate in private, for profit, long term care homes is about 4 times that of municipal run ones. Also, some for profit homes are now being run by local hospitals and the military is helping in others. Apparently, some appalling conditions have been found at some for profit homes.

This is what happens with for profit health care, where all too often profit comes at the expense of patient care.

Even Mexico has their own version of single payer healthcare. So even a country that we consider a 3rd world country, has a more advanced healthcare system than the U $ A.

There’s nothing complex or mysterious about it.
Expand Medicare4All to everybody (as Trump already did for Coronavirus patients); stop allowing Big Pharma to price gouge on our medicine; be clear what medical-rights immigrants have; and set-up free drug clinics nationwide for heroin addicts.
One of the invisible economic injustices of the present system is that parents and grandparents often are called on to pay for their adult childrens’ medical treatment when the kids lose their jobs and become sick or injured. We old folks in effect become the “insurance” payers of last resort, filling in the gaps left by the lousy employer-based eystem.
BTW, when you pay for uncovered doctor visits and Rx’s out of pocket, it’s EXTREMELY costly.

@Nota Bene I admire providers who donate their time to free clinics, etc., but the very presence of these and various government nitch programs (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIPS, V. A., etc) highlight the inadequacy of private insurance. Even with all these programs, many (like my adult son) are uncovered.

When I look at the disgrace that is the U.S. health care system, I am glad I’m in Canada. Our health care is paid for through taxes. As a result, I can go to the doctor, hospital, diagnostic tests and more, at no cost to me.

The USA pays more per person for healthcare than any other OECD country. And gets worse results. But your Insurance Providers, Pharma Companies & Healthcare Providers are more profitable than any one else’s. That’s the part you should worry about..

It provides me with social security, a healthcare system that actually works, 6 weeks payed vacation every year, my own house, 2 kids in college, a wife on a 24 hr workweek and myself on a 32 hr workweek.

Who is better off, me or an average Yankee with 3 jobs, a ton of debts an a constant fear of getting sick?
