“Defund the police? Disband the police? Replace them with what?” I’m surprised CNN even gave Charles Ramsey the air time to say this. Don Lemon made a point to cut off, cut out, and talk over Terry Crews because Crews failed to fully endorse BLM’s agenda: an agenda which many Americans, Ramsey obviously included, find extreme and impractical.
@Colin O’Keeffe The issue is that defunding REALLOCATES funds to appropriate places. The current training is inadequate at best and harmful at worst as many feel cops are literally trained to view the public as enemies etc. This is about created a better more effective system so that cops can deal with the issues they really need to be dealing with, such as domestic violence. Idk where you are getting those numbers, but what we want is reallocation to proper places and a more efficient system, not less officers. So many people are misinterpreting what is being proposed.
AlienPrincess ATX Let me ask you this, how do you expect officers to be better trained if you’re cutting half of their training courses? You’re asking them to do more with less; That means less officers, and less training. If the city really wanted to go through with some of their planned expenditures, then they could’ve trimmed some fat off of the wasteful spending they have every year. Cutting the NYPD budget is just asking for trouble, and it seems they’ve already found it.

2. Keeping more officers on the streets through overtime is an effective tool of peace keeping.
3. Are you a cop? If not, I don’t think you’re in any position to deem what equipment is essential and what isn’t.
4. Once again, I refer you directly to the NYC planned 2021 budget and you’ll see exactly how many officers will be fired. You already see parts of the plan being enacted by disbanding the undercover unit in the city.

Since Covid-19 hit, unemployment and poverty when up and whenever that happens, people do desperate things to survive, especially if they have lost their job and healthcare. Poverty kills! IF the government supported the people, like they did the corporations, you would probably have a completely different situation. Why is crime not going up in Canada? I think it is because the Canadian government has programs to help people get the money they need to survive.. It’s all about the money!

That means 2 out 4 training classes are cut, overtime is cut by $352 million, uniform and equipment is affected, and 1,163 officers will be fired through attrition.
According to the city council, they plan to reallocate $354 million towards agencies “best positioned to carry out the duties that have been previously assigned to the New York Police Department, like the Department of Education, the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene and the Department of Homeless Services.” Whether you chose to believe it or not, this the reality in a lot of cities across the country. Not only are you putting good officers on the unemployment line, you are putting these unarmed employees at risk. Domestic violence, for example, can get really ugly if the aggressor has a gun. This is a highly reckless and idiotic endeavor in a city already struggle with a rise in violence.
