Ex-CIA official weighs in on Russia’s upcoming nuclear exercises

NATO and Russia are set to separately hold long planned exercises of their nuclear forces at a time of huge tension as Russia continues its war on Ukraine. The Pentagon and the US intelligence community are watching for any unexpected or unusual movements of Moscow’s nuclear weapons during Russia’s exercise, which is expected to take place before the end of the month, according to several US officials. #CNN #News

    1. @ab vevo id be surprised if one doesnt work, considering thats all the world needs is one, to go to hell in a handbasket

    2. An Ukrainian, who runs the Kyiv Nuclear Museum and was the “MAN with his finger on the button” which was NOT RED said that the Ukrainian Nuclear ICBMs, which was 1/3 of the former Soviet Union’s total arsenal MUST HAVE CONSTANT MAINTENANCE! Maintenance which most likely is NOT performed today in Russia, considering the state of their War Machine! A few years ago, Russia’s Nuclear Arsenal in Cuba was “quietly” removed and a small article was printed in the NYT stating “the ICBMs were old, obsolete, and haven’t been able to work for decades”!

    1. @skytron22 only somewhat true, because as we‘ve seen over the past 3years (and anti globalization protest have politely pointed out over the last 30years) we are dependent on each other like not the smartest minds could’ve predicted.

You are certainly good in military and entertainment, but you are also obnoxious and self righteous. Hence your comment.

  1. Let’s not forget that the invasion was prepared under the name of a military excercise at the border with Ukraine

    1. @corn pop was an orange dude Are you kidding me? You know what war means? This isn’t „Risiko“ or some other game, this is real and affects real people.
You know how many different powers „owned“ Ukraine? Should Poland go in there too, or Austria, Turkey?
And where do you get these numbers from? Kiew alone is over 1000 years old. While Kiew was growing and growing, there wasn’t a single house in the area where Moscow is standing today, just woods

    2. @VinylRichie Jr. kiev (1,540 years old) existed before Russia. Russia (1,160 years old) existed before Ukraine. Ukraine (oldest documents going back to 1649 are 373 years old. The Country was founded in 1991).

Both Russia and Ukraine claim Kiev as their native home. Ukraine took the eastern side of the mountain range when Russia was at war and could not defended it. It was never Ukraine’s rightful land.

I’d still like to see the eastern side of the mountain range to be negotiated for peace before nuclear holocaust. It’s a geographic strong hold that prevents Russian tanks and aircraft from flying over. That’s where the border rightfully belongs.

  2. The fact we are even talking about this is nothing but sad. We all know what any use of nuclear weapons means and it’s not good.

  3. Russia threatening nuclear warfare in this situation is like the biggest “take my ball and go home” moment in human history. “Oh, I can’t annex a resource-rich, militarily vulnerable neighbor whenever I want? Fine, no one can play!” In this metaphor, the game is human civilization though.

    1. @Mark Cummings you’re going to gasslight me? I didn’t make that clown the president. You got this backwards my friend. You need to take your medicine.

    2. @AGF fans Well, you don’t know that. Granted, and it’s just my opinion, there may be a fair number of Russian ICBMs that won’t work. As we have all seen, rampant corruption, negligence, and incompetence are the hallmark of the Russian military.

    3. @Thomas Olson The last, true Commander in Chief was President Eisenhower, who, as you know, was the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe during WWII. There were other past presidents who had prior military service before holding office. Biden isn’t one of them. For example, George W. H. Bush was a lieutenant (junior grade) during WWII, where he served as a naval fighter pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bush was also the Director of the C.I.A., which would have given him some understanding of military strategy. Biden, on the other hand, is hopeless. His one military decision was the ignominious retreat from Afghanistan, which not only cost lives but emboldened Adolf Putin to attack Ukraine. After the Afghan debacle, the nuclear football seen in Biden’s general vicinity may only be ceremonial in nature due to his general incompetence and progressing dementia.

    1. Evil will alway prevail when they see the good men sit back and do nothing.. scripture bears this truth out in the book of revelations..

    2. @Dog Town Kai are we going to let Biden do whatever he wants? We all know he’s going to hit the button and say Putin did it.

  4. I notice a mistake on the map.
It doesn’t say Ukraine is a pending member state, which it is.
At least it has got decent NATO arsenals currently.

  5. I never understood the “sanctions” thing. Why is the West doing business with these regimes in the first place? Idiotic.

  6. One of the most sobering things I’ve ever heard is the Russian ‘dead hand’ nuclear launch protocol in that if their nuclear command launch system is taken out, it automatically launches all nuclear weapons. We live in insane times indeed…

    1. @colonel radec you can look up the term “fail deadly”. The US has it too. First strike nuclear attack was a major issue during the cold war so both countries built counter first strike options. Main one being automated systems that are turned on during highted risk of nuclear attack and have a few basic layers of i”f” commands. If the fail deadly system cant reach military command and detects nuclear attack by instrumentation stationed around the country, it launches a command rocket that sends launch codes to the silos as it flies past all the launch sites.

  7. Except for the nuclear capabilities, Russia is a country with a tiny GNP relative to the West and really acting beyond its size –

  8. I don’t get why they keep saying stuff like “even a test launch will be unacceptable.” Yeah and somebody will wag a finger at them and won’t do anything really about it.

  9. Is it too much to ask that human beings evolve past violence? Apparently it is… this is sad. So very sad that we as a species still resort to murder and such terror

  10. Barbara Starr always comes across with the goods, yet somehow I always have suspected she knows more than she reports.
    I trust her.
