An Ukrainian, who runs the Kyiv Nuclear Museum and was the “MAN with his finger on the button” which was NOT RED said that the Ukrainian Nuclear ICBMs, which was 1/3 of the former Soviet Union’s total arsenal MUST HAVE CONSTANT MAINTENANCE! Maintenance which most likely is NOT performed today in Russia, considering the state of their War Machine! A few years ago, Russia’s Nuclear Arsenal in Cuba was “quietly” removed and a small article was printed in the NYT stating “the ICBMs were old, obsolete, and haven’t been able to work for decades”!

@VinylRichie Jr. kiev (1,540 years old) existed before Russia. Russia (1,160 years old) existed before Ukraine. Ukraine (oldest documents going back to 1649 are 373 years old. The Country was founded in 1991).
Both Russia and Ukraine claim Kiev as their native home. Ukraine took the eastern side of the mountain range when Russia was at war and could not defended it. It was never Ukraine’s rightful land.
I’d still like to see the eastern side of the mountain range to be negotiated for peace before nuclear holocaust. It’s a geographic strong hold that prevents Russian tanks and aircraft from flying over. That’s where the border rightfully belongs.

Russia threatening nuclear warfare in this situation is like the biggest “take my ball and go home” moment in human history. “Oh, I can’t annex a resource-rich, militarily vulnerable neighbor whenever I want? Fine, no one can play!” In this metaphor, the game is human civilization though.

@Thomas Olson The last, true Commander in Chief was President Eisenhower, who, as you know, was the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe during WWII. There were other past presidents who had prior military service before holding office. Biden isn’t one of them. For example, George W. H. Bush was a lieutenant (junior grade) during WWII, where he served as a naval fighter pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bush was also the Director of the C.I.A., which would have given him some understanding of military strategy. Biden, on the other hand, is hopeless. His one military decision was the ignominious retreat from Afghanistan, which not only cost lives but emboldened Adolf Putin to attack Ukraine. After the Afghan debacle, the nuclear football seen in Biden’s general vicinity may only be ceremonial in nature due to his general incompetence and progressing dementia.

One of the most sobering things I’ve ever heard is the Russian ‘dead hand’ nuclear launch protocol in that if their nuclear command launch system is taken out, it automatically launches all nuclear weapons. We live in insane times indeed…
@colonel radec you can look up the term “fail deadly”. The US has it too. First strike nuclear attack was a major issue during the cold war so both countries built counter first strike options. Main one being automated systems that are turned on during highted risk of nuclear attack and have a few basic layers of i”f” commands. If the fail deadly system cant reach military command and detects nuclear attack by instrumentation stationed around the country, it launches a command rocket that sends launch codes to the silos as it flies past all the launch sites.
