Sustaining Economic Development in a Small Island Developing State: the Case of Dominica

The University of the West Indies Open Campus in Roseau was the ideal setting for a seminar by Dominican Economist,                             Dr. Eisenhower Douglas on his thesis: Sustaining Economic Development in a Small Island Developing State: the Case of Dominica.

Mr. Eisenhower Douglas graduated from the University of the West Indies with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D in Economics in October, 2008.

 

The seminar was attended by over one hundred (100) persons, including  Minister for Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Labour, Hon. Vince Henderson, Minister for Tourism and Legal Affairs,           Hon. Ian Douglas,   Dr. Francis Severin, Head, UWI Open Campus, Dr. Gregory Robin, Director of CARDI in Dominica.

 

Remarks were delivered by Dr. George Bell, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Cave Hill Campus and Economists, Mr. Herbert Thomas and Mr. Raymond Austrie.

 

Personal reflections on the life of Mr. Eisenhower Douglas were delivered by businessman,       Mr. McIntyre Douglas and Attorney-At-Law, Mr. Kondwani Williams.

 

Dr. Eisenhower Douglas has worked with the Government of Dominica since the 1980s, mainly as an Economist in the Ministry of Finance and Planning. For a brief period in 2004, he served as Acting Financial Secretary.  Until recently he served as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Culture, Gender Affairs and Information. Currently    Dr. Douglas is the Director of Trade in the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Consumer and Diaspora Affairs.
