Since the end of the Cold War, most democratic breakdowns have been caused not by generals and soldiers but by elected governments themselves. Like Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, elected leaders have subverted democratic institutions in Georgia, Hungary, Nicaragua, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Ukraine.
Democratic backsliding today begins at the ballot box. The electoral road to breakdown is dangerously deceptive. The constitution is suspended or scrapped. Elected autocrats maintain a veneer of democracy while eviscerating its substance.
Institutions alone are not enough to rein in elected autocrats. Constitutions must be defended, by political parties and organized citizens but also by democratic norms. Without robust norms, constitutional checks and balances do not serve as the bulwarks of democracy we imagine them to be. Institutions become political weapons, wielded forcefully by those who control them against those who do not..
This is how elected autocrats subvert democracy – packing and “weaponizing” the courts and other neutral agencies, buying off the media and the private sector (or bullying them into silence) and rewriting the rules of politics to tilt the playing field against opponents. The tragic paradox of the electoral route to authoritarianism is that democracy’s assassins use the very institutions of democracy – gradually, subtly, and even legally – to ki// it.

I hope these state laws get thrown out. It isn’t fair to target a group of people so their voting is much more difficult if not impossible.

The civil war ended in 1865. But it is still being fought. It is ingrained in the DNA of the country that will never accept anything except whatever they see as they country. In actual fact it was never theirs, it wasn’t any single group or person, it belongs to everyone and these people cannot accept they have to share it.
The thing that surprised me most is the fact gerrymandering is legal in the USA. I cannot think of another first world country that allows gerrymandering.
This is part of the reasons why America has the 25th best democracy in the world.

The US is now listed as a “flawed democracy”. It has a disproportionate number of filthy rich one-percenters. It allows other things that other democracies do not, like massive unlimited campaign contributions, the right the own and carry guns, etc. But the USA is the “wild west”, “ma freedumb”.
If your political party attempts to shut down the post office to prevent the wrong people from voting during a pandemic, it’s not a party that believes in democracy. Trump himself has always voted by mail. In addition, he was never a republican until he realized he could use his “The Art of the Deal” pop psychology tactics on a huge mass of the population. Study the fascist movement of Europe during the 20th century.

Perhaps an even more stark way of looking at voter suppression is from the point of view of patriotism. The right loves to wrap itself 8n the flag and crow loudly about their patriotism. If this nation fought a revolution over lack of representation, their inability to vote for MPs, then support of voting rights must be a hallmark of American patriotism. Those supporting voter suppression, those watching voter suppression without protesting it, are the antithesis of patriotic. Those supporting voter suppression should be called what they are: anti-American and unpatriotic.
