I have been reading/participating in YouTube comments sections for some time now. All too often the comments descend into invective, denigration, insult, derisiveness, and in general, disrespect, because one person’s opinions conflict with another’s. Once the negativity ensues, reasoned discourse goes out the window. There is nothing new about people who, when presented with reams of data countering their entrenched opinions/position(s), maintain their opinions/positions. From my perspective, this is hard to understand. From their perspective, my position is hard to understand. Questions, when asked sincerely, may seem inane to some, with answers so obvious that many may be tempted to answer in a derisive manner. I maintain that any question, when asked sincerely, is worthy of a respectful, reasoned answer. To answer otherwise will likely promote defensiveness, and once defensiveness ensues, reasoned discourse again goes out the window. I conclude with an admonition to respect each other. We are all human, we are all fallible, we are all invested our viewpoints, we are all ignorant of the vast majority of what there is to know, but we must keep an open mind. We must learn to behave with humility, to accept the we are ignorant of most things, and be willing to think critically and change our minds as our ignorance decreases. We must learn to ask the question upon reading or hearing an idea, viewpoint, or statement: is it truly factual and supported by evidence? Perhaps it is factual, but by questioning the validity, and then seeking our own answers, and not merely repeating what others have said, we increase our knowledge of what is real, and reduce our ignorance that is based upon what is not real. Who knows, you just may learn something when you listen attentively, and the others may learn when you respond respectfully in a well reasoned manner.
