I’m glad Fauci is standing up to Trump. I don’t blame him for walking a tightrope for a while but the more that a wide range of responsible people stand up to his crimes and negligence, the sooner Trump will get the message to concede defeat after the election. A brief history of COVID 19 in America:
When it first hit the US and we had 15 cases, Trump said it would soon be down to 1, then none, “like a miracle”. He was wrong.
Experts projected that by doing nothing, 2-3 million would die. That’s the “herd immunity” strategy, where 70% of the population is infected. Not only would millions die, but many more would get very sick, and the economy would crash and burn. That was never a viable option. Trump wants credit for saving 2-3 million lives for his travel ban on Chinese and European nationals. He did far less than the bare minimum. Does he want a cookie?
Once COVID got a foothold, the death toll was projected to be 100k-220k IF we locked down properly for a few months. Trump quoted those numbers. So, we locked-down. Soon after, it looked like the death toll would be closer to 40k-60k.
But then, he openly questioned the science and politicized the virus. and we didn’t lock down properly. Now, will exceed 220,000 deaths. The economy is in the toilet, there’s no end in sight, and the rest of the world is getting over it.
Now, even after it was revealed that Trump knew how bad it was, but said he wanted to “downplay” it, he’s nonsensically claiming he “upplayed” it, as he floats the herd immunity strategy and discourages measures as simple as wearing masks and avoiding crowds. But maybe it will still just go away like a miracle.
