The Government of Japan continues to show in a tangible way its support for Dominica’s development.
On Thursday, Dominica’s Hon. Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit and Ambassador of Japan to Dominica, H.E. Yoshimasa Tezuka signed a one million dollar agreement for an exchange of notes regarding Japans’ grant aid for the provision of industrial products.
According to His Excellency, The Ambassador, “An input an aim of this grant is to address damage caused by the heavy rainfall which occurred in December last year. It will be utilized for the importation of industrial products procured through tenders which are necessary to promote economic and social development efforts by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
“The imported products will basically be manufactured in the area of East Japan, thereby, contributing to the restoration of the local economy which suffered significant damage following the historic March 2011 earthquake.”
The Hon. Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit says Japan’s contribution to Dominica at this time speaks volumes of the country’s commitment to the growing relationship with Dominica.
“All of us would remember the devastating earthquake which shook Japan and we would all agree that there are many families who would do well with this one million dollars in Japan itself, But because of the extra-ordinary commitment to Japan; to its global commitment and the need to assist developing countries like Dominica, it is making this extraordinary effort in presenting to the Government and people of Dominica at this time one million dollars.”
Dominica’s leader added that Dominica and Japan have enjoyed excellent fraternal relations over an extended period of time.
“There are many people who believe that the relationship between Dominica and Japan only exists on fisheries. This is not the case. We have a very broad relationship with Japan on many, many issues and Japan has been a steadfast friend of developing islan-states like Dominica.”
