Skerrit, 38, arrived at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana Tuesday, where he was welcomed by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra.
“This visit will strengthen ties between the two nations, and will express again Dominica’s support to Cuba,” Skerrit said.
During his stay in Cuba, Skerrit will meet with Cuban leader Raul Castro and lead Dominica’s delegation on Friday to attend the Third Ministerial Meeting between Cuba and Caricom, at which they will assess relations between Havana and the Caricom’s fifteen members.
The meeting will also analyze the situation in Haiti, which was hit by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12 this year.
The Commonwealth of Dominica established diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1996. Both countries are members of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) together with Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Antigua and Barbuda as well as St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
