Roseau, Dominica – Monday, July 21, 2014 – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit has stated that Dominica is “the ideal location for the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.” Prime Minister Skerrit made the remarks when he addressed the opening ceremony of the Validation Workshop on the Establishment of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, CCREEE at the Dominica State House Conference Centre on Monday, July 21, 2014.
Prime Minister Skerrit endorsed the establishment of the CCREEE as it has the potential to play an important role in renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Caribbean.
“Building capacity, resource assessment and research and development in renewable energy must be at the top of our agenda. The consolidation of regional institutions to better service the needs of our member states is a critical component to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and to enhance energy efficiency in our region. An institution that is focused on providing training, policy advice, the mobilization of resources, and research and development would provide critical support to our countries,” Prime Minister Skerrit stated.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with SIDS DOCK (represented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) are assisting the Caribbean Countries in the establishment of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE). The initiative follows-up on an official request of SIDS DOCK to UNIDO and the Austrian Government to assist in the creation of regional sustainable energy centres for SIDS in the Caribbean, Pacific, Africa and the Indian Ocean.
The Government of Austria through the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) has committed to fund the establishment and first operational phase of the CCREEE. Prime Minister Skerrit expressed gratitude to the Government of Austria for their contribution to our development efforts.
