Roseau, Dominica – August 25, 2009……… In keeping with its stated commitment to expand its diplomatic relationships around the world for the benefit of the people of Dominica, the Government of Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has recently established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Finland. Finland is a member of the European Union with a population of 5.3 million people.
A joint communiqué signed in London by representatives from the Commonwealth of Dominica and the Republic of Finland on August 19, 2009 reads:
“The Government of the Republic of Finland and the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica,
Desiring to promote mutual understanding and consolidate relations of friendship and cooperation between their peoples, being guided by the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations;
Have decided to establish diplomatic relations as of the date of the signature of the present joint communiqué;
Agree on that their diplomatic and consular relations shall be based on the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 24 April 1963;
In witness whereof, their Excellences the Ambassador and High Commissioner, being duly authorised by their respective Governments, have signed the present joint communiqué…”
Since the January 31st, 2000 General Elections, the Commonwealth of Dominica has more than doubled the number of countries around the world it has diplomatic relations with. Dominica now has diplomatic relations with sixty-eight (68) countries around the world.
