Do witnesses have to comply with Congress’ subpoenas?

In this impeachment edition of The Point, Chris Cillizza and CNN legal analyst Laura Coates dig into one of our most-requested topics — what’s the deal with subpoenas? Chris and Laura explain how some members of the Trump administration have been able to ignore formal congressional subpoenas to testify or produce documents. #CNN #News #Cillizza #ImpeachmentInquiry

    1. Hello Chris, what fraction of the comments on your videos do you usually read? I’m guessing choose to zero, but maybe you have a more accurate value?

    2. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
      1. Since Mike Pence knew about Trumps extortion on Ukraine, how likely is it that he would become President, if the Senat miraculously removes Trump?
      2. Hypothetically – if Trump resignes, Pence takes over and pardons Trump – what happens with the investigations?
(2.1 Is it possible for Trump to pardon Pence now, resign afterwards and get pardoned by Pence?)
      3. If Trump leaves office in any way, will he be charged for obstruction of justice in the Russia investigation or other crimes?

  1. You should do another show with Laura on the liability of everyone around Trump: Pence, Pompeo, Mulvaney, Barr, etc. These people are aiding and abetting Trump’s crimes.

    1. Trump has committed no crimes and if he did, you jackasses would have been all over them. So, you got nothing, just emotions, heresay and corruption to frame the President. You people are SICK.

    2. @Shawn Corbin Yep he did.
      And speaking of “jack asses”
      Are you
      “Mirror projecting”
      Just like your
      Dear Leader?

    1. Republicans the lawless disorder party .
They still talk about Hillary E-mails ignoring that Pompeo , Mlvaney , Rick Perry and Mike Pence have not followed their subpoenas at all .

    2. @LAST CALL
Are you afraid that VP Mike Pence would become president ? Or are you really that delusional that you think Hillary will be president if T-Rump is impeached ?
So what is it , you are stupid or a total moron ?

  2. If we had a real justice system he people ignoring their subpoenas would be in jail – just like any one of us would be.

    1. @Patrick Malone Yeah, I get it. He is one angry republican. I am so tired of this reality show presidency and the disgusting, far right, sycophants. I am tired of both the republicans and democrats calling each other names. I am guilty of that myself after being attacked for my perspectives. It’s got to stop and we need to put Country before all this BS politicking (don’t know if that is a word, don’t care) and understand that America is the victim of Russian attacks and propaganda and it is dividing and tearing us apart. We need to cleanse the office and move on swiftly. Vote 2020!!$

    2. @Raven R the day Obama won Republicans got together and said they will make sure Obama was a 1 term president, and they refuse to help him with anything

  3. “Be true to what you said on paper.” If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions,” King said.

“Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they hadn’t committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right. And so just as I say, we aren’t going to let dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren’t going to let any injunction turn us around. We are going on.”

    1. Well we know that they never read Shakespeare famous quote: “This above all, to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” We don’t see any of that going on. Sad!

  4. Thanks CNN.😊 “Unpresidented” acknowledged and appreciated? It’s not time for Chris Cilliza’s name or “The Point” to be in the Title?😁 Thanks Laura Coates.😊

    1. They do it for other segments, wonder why they haven’t legit given this its own lane yet on paper vs just bunching it under the normal CNN banner 🤷🏾‍♂️

  5. If I were innocent I certainly would want to testify to clear myself. If I were guilty I surely would not want to testify for fear of being busted.

    1. With all due respect!….you’re an idiot! Tou should never give away your rights without a clear understanding of what can happen. There is a reason that miranda rights exist…you idiot!…..(with all due respect)

  7. But if your an Average Citizen and lngnore a Subpoena you’ll go straight too Jail ! 🤔
    P.S That’s Called Double Standards !

    1. But the President is not your average citizen, he’s the head of one of the three branches of government. No one branch has full power over another. However, if the Judicial Branch agrees with the subpoenas, that there’s just cause, then the Judicial Branch can order the subpoenas be followed. Just like the President isn’t a king, the Members of the Legislative Branch are not either. The Legislative Branch shouldn’t be allowed to trample all over the Executive Branch without just cause to do so. They’d also have more authority and legitimacy if the Judicial Branch agrees.

    2. The difference is we average citizens are not part of the Executive Branch of the government. The third branch of the federal government the Judicial Branch should adjudicate these issues.

    3. @Michael Jensen you need to take a civics class and read the Constitution … The only people that have a say on oversight is congress. The Constitution uses words like “shall” that is not up for interrupting.

    4. Rule of law means nothing to Republicans. The Constitution is irrelevant; we can do whatever we want including bribing a foreign government. Vote blue.

  8. Good grief. This has been going on for how long and you’re just asking that question? Good thing we didn’t wait for you to put some understanding to it. Or do you think you’re explaining this to Fox viewers?

  9. I can’t believe that he could be impeached and removed from office and still be on the ballot in November. That is insanity!

    1. What does this say?
      Article I (Article 1 – Legislative) Section 3
7: Judgment in Cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.
