A new study from the Alzheimer's Association shows that daily consumption of multivitamins may slow the decline of cognitive aging by 60% in older adults. CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Tara Narula breaks down the study and what one can do to improve cognitive function.
Finally a good topic on CNN that doesn’t have to do with orange man, Jan 6, Russia Russia.
However, there should be some control over the production process and instruction for dose allowed for vitamins too. Overuse of some vitamins can accumulate in the body and cause harm.

@Ronald Carpenter vitamin A and D stay in fatty tissues and in large amounts they become toxic. Also there are some organic components added to vitamins that accumulate in fatty tissues. In addition even if the extra vitimin is removed, it is too heavy on the liver break up, and if you think all extra is removed by urine, well much of it is removed by sweat too. My suggestion to friends was, if your urine is light looks normal it means the vitamin was well absorbed in the body. If the urine is colored and darker than usual it means there are some compunds the body cannot use, so it does not serve it purpose.
It was found years ago that heavy intake of vitamins can cause fatty liver. Nice to have some new research on the subject.
*Overuse
Most people I know have a really lousy diet. Taking a multiple vitamin certainly can’t hurt.
@𝄆𝔽𝕣𝕖𝕖 𝕊𝕟𝕠𝕠𝕜𝕚𝅗𝅥 Ontologically and biologically, that is an incomplete statement. The phrase “not even wrong” comes to mind.
@JohnnyNosebleed Huh?
@Ronald Carpenter yeah but if you have any bad habits that are messing up your insides you should shove as much vitamins in there as possible to balance that out
Last fight https://youtu.be/3RVEXAp6PuU
@Joe Smith No. While it is possible, in theory, to overdose on fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) excess water soluble vitamins are removed by the kidneys. And, you have to take a whopping big dose of the fat soluble ones, to have toxic effects. A normal multivitamin is fine.
I can’t wait until the study released next year which will link daily multivitamin use with early onset dementia…🤪
Information overload LOL
Big, if true. However, I find the timing of this study a little suspicious considering all of the recent articles telling people to stop buying supplements because most studies have found they don’t actually help.
@Ronald Carpenter Ronald, you are correct.
@Mark Warren I just busted out laughing so hard. Savage!
If that’s the case demented biden should take about 20 a day
Good! Been using plant based Multis…
Interesting. However I had to stop taking daily multivitamin because they caused polyps to grow on my body that had to be surgically removed. Not every body reacts the same.
I’m guessing your American and grew up on an American diet

How did you establish the vitamins were related to polyps? Are you referring to skin tags, which are a normal part of aging, and appear basically around where the body joins the neck and limbs?
@Diego motta Nope. My diet is very Mediterranean. Very healthy. Love my Greek salads. But very little pasta. I took the multivitamins for a while because I took up swimming seriously. They seemed to reduce my susceptibility to colds and flues for a while. But after the polyps started to appear I stopped taking the multivitamins and the polyps stopped growing.
There is no study linking vitamins to polyp formation. There are a few studies linking excess calcium consumption to polyp formation in the colon. So, it was probably your mineral intake, not vitamin intake, that was the problem. Go ahead and take vitamins that don’t have excess Ca.
“Dietary Supplements and Mortality Rate in Older Women, The Iowa Women’s Health Study”
Pubmed article
” In older women, several commonly used dietary vitamin and mineral supplements may be associated with increased total mortality risk; this association is strongest with supplemental iron. ”
Do not take vitamins unless diagnosed with a deficiency by a doctor and approved by a doctor.

That is quite interesting. I hadn’t seen such a study before. As an engineer the first thing I note is that there’s no mention of causation. So, we don’t know: is the supplement killing people? Or, are people with bad health, or say, bad diets, taking supplements, and perhaps doing BETTER than people people with the same issues but no supplements? And is the problem people taking supplements that are say 10x the USRDA “megavitamins,” or are they lighter-weight 1x USRDA? Any chance they have, say, trace amounts of arsenic or something that build up? Reading these figures, it sounds like supplements MIGHT making it 5% more likely to die. That is a LOT of deaths! It’s a little alarming there are so few studies on this.
@lqr824 Agreed, it’s not sure why there are increased rate of mortality. The study mentioned in the article apparently is a randomized controlled trial, which is the gold standard of research (if conducted correctly).
@Joe Smith Yeah, I’m an engineer, so kind of a scientist-lite 😀 I looked at it and it seemed like the study itself was fine. It’s VERY important to know this correlation. It is telling us SOMETHING. We just don’t know WHAT! If these added chances of death are all independent variables, AND it’s causation, then it sounds like chance of death goes up 20%, making it one of the top five causes of preventable death. But IS it causation? We should find out. And, if it is, what the heck is the problem: 1) too much nutrient = bad, and if so what level? Is it just USRDA is already dangerous Or are the problems occuring for people taking 20x USRDA? 2) or are the supplements simply not made right? In other words do we need more oversight, testing for arsenic or what have you?
@lqr824 It’s just older women, too. It is unclear about how men would be affected but it is concerning to me.
I think this is good science. My mother, whom I recently lost, was in declining health for more than two years. She got to a point where she would only eat three things, and I think that greatly contributed to her decline. We ate a healthy diet with her at the helm as our mother. I recently had some issues and looked at how to treat them holistically. A Super B complex and ALA supplement fixed my problems in two weeks. In my grief and depression I was not eating right and had the symptoms of Beri Beri! Never did the doctors say to supplement my mother’s horrible diet, and I wouldn’t on my own, as she was on some big meds. But I think she had several vitamin deficiencies that contributed in the end. Your body need vitamins and minerals to function properly. If you can’t get them through diet, supplements help if you research and buy good ones.
*Your body needs…
The most common problem is Vit D deficiency and calcium in the elderly.
My condolences to you. I don’t think doctors want us well. It’s rare to hear them talk about holistic treatment. Their first line of treatment is a pharmaceutical remedy. Glad you are on the mend. God bless you.

Anyone who thinks that a personal impression and one anecdote demonstrates anything cannot determine what is or is not “good science.” I’m going to actually go read the study as soon as the name of the author or paper comes out of Jake’s face.
one day is good another day is bad, I have been taking vitamins since the age of 25 yrs old and I am glad I did and still do.I am very healthy 77 yrs old haven’t been sick for the last 20 yrs
nowaday I try taking vitamin too. like Vitamin C ,drink milk…

Same here, after 30 I take a daily multi-vitamin and a multi-mineral supplement👍🏽
Also DO NOT smoke tobacco. Do not drink very much alcohol either.

My grandmother, who’s going to be 100 next year, drank a glass of aloe Vera juice with a handful of vitamins each morning and she was managing an apartment complex and driving a moving van until she was 97 when she broke her hip.
Cool. But anecdotal evidence is meaningless.

I would suggest the FDA make an OPTIONAL approval process for supplements. Supplements that pass the approval process then can show an FDA stamp of approval and be able to charge more to some customers. Nutrition is pretty important I think, and I’d pay extra for approved supplements. I’d suggest they be spot-tested to verify 1) contain what they claim, 2) don’t contain anything NOT on the label, and 3) be supplements with some medically-recognized efficacy. So no 10,000% of US recommended daily allowance Vitamin C, etc. Just mild and scientifically advisable health aid.

I take a senior multivitamin every other day based on the belief that I have a good diet but not perfect, so I don’t need it every day but every other day makes it more certain that I am not missing much. On the days I don’t take a multi, I take calcium for bone strength, again because I don’t think I need it every day. Every day I take a fish oil tablet.

I lost both of my parents to this and it was so hard
I have been taking my vitamins everyday since
I took care of my mother first for almost two years
I came back home and it wasn’t long
I got a call from his wife
I ended up going and being with him for a little over a year
I couldn’t believe how fast the Alzheimer’s took him
He had been in the service for so long
And he had so many good friends and people around him
I just don’t want to get it
I don’t want anyone else to have to see the damage it can do
I hope they find a way to help those that do

Remember though, that Not all vitamins are created equal. Suppliers of the ingredients used in vitamins are not always kosher…
No enough is done to manage & gather metrics on vitamins deficiency in the USA. That would be counter productive to other interests. Ask for your doctor to get blood drawn, it cost some $$ but you will find out, and easily get you on a path to make changes to your life, exercise , eat and sleep better.
