Let’s forget that you can be asymptomatic and shedding loads of viruses simply by breathing–that’s what the UK government and this sort of reporting seem to be forgetting. And so the question is “Who’s healthy?” when it comes to mask-wearing. This is important even if asymptomatic spread makes up a small percentage of cases. All it takes is for one sick person who escapes contact tracing to start a whole upward spike of cases when the populace is not in lockdown. Are you confident with the UKs testing efforts and handling of contact tracing and quarantine measures to protect the families of those who test positive? I think the UK government has it wrong. And because homemade masks provide imperfect protection for those who are well doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be part of a protection strategy. Educate people so that they know the protection is imperfect and that contamination can happen (while showing them how to decrease the risk of spreading the contamination to their faces as is being done in other countries). Instead, what does the UK do? It tries to make people feel stupid for using a strategy that demonstrates some protective capacity.
