How did wearing a mask become a polarizing issue? If you’re paying close attention, the arguments against masks might sound familiar: denying the science, cherry-picking data, cries of infringing on personal freedoms. It’s a page out of the Republican establishment’s playbook for weaponizing climate change denial. Back in 2018, Chris spoke with Vox writer David Roberts about the crisis of information cultivated by the current conservative movement and it's a conversation that seems, if possible, more relevant than ever.

I do soullessly swear, I will menacingly support and defund the Institution of Public Safety of the United States, against all humanity, American and Patriotic; and that I will induce true evil and alliance to the same; and that I take this psychological manipulation freely, without any mental awareness or of common sense; and that I will; well and faithfully discharge the duties of the swamp in which I am about to enter.
Seat belts are similar. Do we complain about having to buckle up?

Knowledge builds on knowledge so if every human has to reinvent the wheel every generation, every individual is a road to ignorance. So yes knowledge is a matter of trust. But there also has to be validation of that trust. For example we know if we turn on our televisions with the remote it will function. We don’t know why or how to build a television or how it works but because it turns in nearly every time we push the button, we trust in the fact of its technology. Each culture has its well of knowledge to draw on. For example I work in the Deaf community that often has limited access to all the same information in an accessible language as a person who can hear. So often they will trust information from a deaf person over a hearing person. Not simply from ignorance or intelligence or lack of access to information but due to who they more tend to trust because they have often been oppressed by the system of hearing people. So between the language access and history of oppression at times there is a tendency to get important information from a trusted and learned deaf person. So much of our cultural beliefs as to what is universal truth comes from what people we look up to tell us, parents, educators, governments and celebrities. It takes a lot of courage and effort to find out information that is in an accessible language to us ( scientific jargon is often not accessible to most people) to move us to question our beliefs and go against those beliefs that are cherished by those in our circle of culture if we discover our beliefs fly in the face of what we learn to actually be true. Case in point: was the earth flat in the time of Galileo.
