Small Island states militant about climate deals for Copenhagen

dessima_williams_chair_of_the_alliance_of_small_islands_developing_states_aosis.jpgOctober 7, 2009: Bangkok (Panos) – The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) including the Caribbean yesterday said that they had marshalled almost 100 countries to support their call for more ambitious emission reduction targets in the new deal to be struck on climate change in Copenhagen in December.

“The AOSIS is not waiting on others to put in the targets to protect us,” said AOSIS chair, Dessima Williams while expressing disappointment at the slow pace of talks in Bangkok and the lack of a sense of urgency in the negotiations.

My fellow Citizens and Residents of Antigua and Barbuda

I begin this week by drawing attention to the hundreds of people who picketed the UPP regime last Thursday.

This mega picket followed closely the 15,000-people march of two weeks ago.

Together they show that the people of Antigua and Barbuda are utterly fed-up with the failed policies and disastrous practices of the UPP government which, each day, is further impoverishing our people and ruining our economy.

Appointment follows extensive search & thorough selection processBRIDGETOWN, Barbados (Aug 17, 2009) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has announced the appointment of a new Secretary General.  He is Barbadian Hugh Riley who has been the organization’s Interim Secretary General for the past several months.

Commission of Inquiry cost tops 2 million

St John’s, August 05, 2009 – The Antigua Labour Party condemns the multi-million dollar price tag on the UPP’s politically motivated Commission of Inquiry as a totally vulgar and hostile act of disrespect to the public interest.

While the UPP has sentenced the people of Antigua and Barbuda to suffer increased economic hardships dishonestly blamed on the global financial situation, Baldwin Spencer and Justin Simon have the unmitigated gall to squander over two million dollars on their name and shame election gimmick.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Opposition Leader Lester Bird Sunday severely criticised the Speaker of the House of Assembly Giselle Isaac for being “blatantly partisan” and “openly hostile to the opposition benches”.

In his weekly radio broadcast, Bird said that the person occupying the post of Speaker in any country is required to be an impartial and objective arbiter of meetings of the House and is obliged to give the opposition benches a fair and adequate a hearing as the government side.
