PAHO strengthens regional communication network for disaster response (Article)

Bridgetown, BARBADOS, November 25, 2009. Panos – The Pan American Health Organisation, (PAHO) recently concluded a 3-day training workshop on Communication and Information Management for Disaster Response geared at boosting disaster response among communication partners in the Caribbean Region.

“Since Hurricane David struck Dominica in 1979, PAHO/WHO has maintained a disaster response team to assess needs and respond promptly in the Caribbean. This team has been on standby every year during the hurricane season and has responded effectively,” said PAHO representatives while giving the rationale for the workshop. However, there has been no opportunity to test it after a major earthquake. In 2005, the Governing Bodies requested the Director of PAHO to further support Member States by establishing a region wide mechanism for immediate disaster response.”

Police: Suspect in deaths of officers not in house

maurice.jpgSEATTLE (AP) — A suspect in the slaying of four police officers who were gunned down in a suburban coffee shop was surrounded by police at a Seattle house early Monday, wounded and possibly dead, authorities said.

Negotiators were trying to communicate with Maurice Clemmons, 37, using loudspeakers, explosions and even a robot to try to prod him from hiding. At one point, gunshots rang through the neighborhood, about 30 miles from the original crime scene.

White House crashers named in 16 civil suits

Washington (CNN) — The Virginia couple accused of crashing President Obama’s first White House state dinner on Tuesday are named in at least 16 different civil suits in Fauquier County, sometimes as plaintiffs, sometimes as defendants.

A trawl through court records on Thursday revealed a more complete picture of Tareq and Michaele Salahi, who have left an extensive paper trail in federal bankruptcy and state court filings.

Caribbean Nationals In Several Nations Living On Less Than Two US Dollars A Day

pic-p.jpgCaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Aug. 14, 2009: A significant percentage of Caribbean nationals in five nations in the region are living on less than $US2 per day.

That`s according to a new report put forth by the Population Reference Bureau`s 2009 World Population Data Sheet. The report, which states that 97 percent of global population growth over the next 40 years will occur in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and Africa, found that the five Caribbean nations recorded double digit percentage points of nationals living on less than two US dollars.
