ATTORNEYS GENERAL, MINISTERS OF LEGAL AFFAIRS AND SENIOR LEGAL OFFICIALS FROM THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNIT

Attorneys General and Ministers for Legal Affairs, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice and other legal officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) gathered in Dominica recently for the First Meeting of Senior Officials of the Legal Affairs Committee (SOLAC), Chief Parliamentary Counsel (CPC) and the Fourteenth Special Meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee (LAC).  

 

In an address at the opening ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica’s Attorney General, Hon. Francine Baron-Royer explained the mandate of the Legal Affairs Committee.

THE HIGH COST OF ELECTRICITY IS NOT TAX RELATED SAYS ENERGY MINISTER, HON. CHARLES SAVARIN

Roseau, Dominica – October 10, 2008…….  Minister for Public Utilities, Energy and Ports, Hon. Charles Savarin has stated that the removal of the excise tax on fuel and the removal of VAT on electricity would not have a significant effect on the overall cost of electricity in Dominica. The Minister made the disclosure at a Press Briefing by Cabinet recently.

 

According to Hon. Savarin, some persons are of the opinion that the Government can cause the cost of electricity to drop “if taxes are reduced or removed”. The Minister stressed that the high cost of electricity is not “tax related”.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE LATE HON. ALLEYNE CARBON RECOGNISED

Alleyne Carbon,  described  by many  as one of the most industrious  Ministers of Communications and Works in the history of Dominica, has now been immortalised in the annals of Dominica’s history, with the naming of a road in  his memory in his home village of Capuchin.

 

A ceremony attended by Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Cabinet Ministers and Mrs. June Carbon, widow of the late Alleyne Carbon among others, took place in the village of Capuchin on Sunday, during the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The Road is now known as the Alleyne Carbon Ring Road

TWENTY DOMINICAN STUDENTS TO ENGAGE THE CSME THROUGH FIELD PROMOTION

Roseau, Dominica – September 25, 2008……. Twenty (20) students from the Dominica State College are among the first batch of sixty (60) university students to be trained on how to identify and develop a response to opportunities within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).  These students, selected from the various faculties within the DSC, will travel to Jamaica from September 30th to October 4th 2008.  Twenty (20) students from other Caribbean countries will travel from Suriname to Barbados and the other twenty will travel from Belize to Trinidad and Tobago.

 

The objective of this project is to engage the next generation in the Caribbean in identifying career opportunities in the field with regard to wage employment, self- employment and starting a business within the CSME.  The project is an activity of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat CSME Public Education Programme facilitated with the assistance from the 9th European Development Fund (EDF) Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP).
