One-fifth of all passenger cars, SUVs and trucks sold in Canada in 2026 will need to run on electricity under new regulations Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is proposing Wednesday.
By 2030, the mandate will hit 60 per cent of all sales and by 2035, every passenger vehicle sold in Canada will need to be electric.

This is a mistake: we should be moving away from building in more car reliance. Electric cars are still cars, clogging streets and encouraging very non-green city planning.
Rural canadians need range EVs can’t provide, and urban canadians need better public transit. This helps nobody.
@Ewen Chani watched a review on a double battery hummer………100km per charge in the winter months!!
That’s what the liberals do best, help nobody
@Ewen Chan yupper….500km to the main hospital in saskatchewan round trip…
cut the battery in half as is now -26 for highs so i would be lucky to get there then have to charge to full before i would be able to leave to arrive home safely!!….. you city folk have a lot to learn!!……and like the gov of the day you need to find some common sense!!
@lots ofwind I wouldn’t even make it home from the grocery store ..on top of that my dead EV would be a Hazzard on the highway.
@Cindy Haduik 👍👍
I think it would be more honest to say that the present Canadian government practices one of their favorite things…you know, mandating something, NOT Canada.
Yeah not a free market anymore
The leaders need to practice this lunatic they should only be driving electric vehicles
Note the timing on this: 2026. The year after when the next federal election is set to occur, assuming the Liberal-NDP alliance holds until then.
Seems like this legislation is being set up to be an election issue.
Of course……if he doesn’t get elected again it won’t be mandated. They can’t force Canadians to buy electric cars if we don’t have money for them.
I will purchase an EV when the promised 1 billionth promised tree is planted.
By the time everybody continues to pay the higher taxes there won’t be enough money to go around to buy an electric let alone gas
The crooks are out mandating their future profits . and they are proud of their crimes . to hell with these criminals
We are starting to really love be Canadian, here we are free, free to be poor, free to do exactly what the government tells you to do lol
They COULD always just make gasoline be more expensive like it is in Europe and then you would be BEGGING for an EV.
@Ewen Chan Why would we beg for an EV that doesn’t start in cold weather. We would be demanding more affordable gasoline. Get real lefty.
@Ewen Chan who can afford a 100k EV?
@Ewen Chan Here’s a question…why can’t fuel powered vehicles be made super efficient?
The answer is that they cannot take control of the vehicle remotely if you’re guilty of wrong think.
@Ewen Chan You would like that huh?
Is there also funding for power generation and distribution improvements?
I hope Canadian voters mandate to remove this government from office if our electrical power grid is not up to the task.
We should be travelling around in horse and buggy like the Amish.
Electric cars don’t work in 95% of Canada for 6 months out of the year unless you live in Vancouver and Victoria thanks
Why havent these climate warriors mandate and pass a bill on banning the use of private jets??
Funny how Sweden has banned the use of electric vehicles during the winter because of the power grid can’t handle it.
Seriously? Isn’t that interesting. What are they ‘driving’ during the off season?
Great. You have the chargers. Questions that needs answers:
1- Where is the Electrical power coming from? Nuclear power? Wind?
2- Do Condominiums and Apartment buildings have the accommodation for charging all vehicles?
3- Can the current Power Transmission network accommodate the increase in load transportation requirements?
4- Could the government guarantee that operational costs will not increase and/or remain economically feasible when such an investment is required for the transition?
5- What is your recycling program for highly polluting batteries?
All excellent questions with no answers
I’m just curious to know what happens when you are in the middle of nowhere and your almighty glorified forklift runs out of power?
Hahahaha and during this -40 cold spell the power grid is under strain !!!!!!!! Idiots and electric cars 🙄
I am looking forward to the time that the “Planners” of this future fiasco will start begging the Drivers in the Summer mostly to STOP Charging their vehicles because of Lack of Electricity! I am NOT negative, I just remember when I heard this during a hot summer a while back when we had like 100 electrical vehicles in Canada.
The goal is understandable the fact of the matter is very unrealistic with the Canadian weather. Electric is still in its infancy for lasting in Canadian weather.
With vehicle to grid, cars can be used to help the grid during peak periods, then recharge in the middle of the night when rates are cheapest. Ofc, getting rid of Doug Ford will help, his ripping out charging stations didnt help
Getting rid of every single brain dead liberal is what Canada needs, bud!
