A Russian court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington.

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. Griner, 32, was not at the Moscow Regional Court hearing but appeared via video link.

At her trial, Griner admitted to having the canisters in her luggage but testified she packed them inadvertently in her haste to make her flight and had no criminal intent. Her defense team presented written statements saying she had been prescribed cannabis to treat chronic pain. The nine-year sentence was close to the maximum of 10 years, and Griner’s lawyers argued after the conviction that the punishment was excessive. They said in similar cases defendants have received an average sentence of about five years, with about a third of them granted parole.

  2. 2.16m subscribers, 160 views. Gives us an idea of how much anyone cares. 0:42, “We probably need to use all the legal defense available to us…” Probably? With such an incredibly aggressive legal defense team, it’s surprising she’s still in prison!

  3. All this could have been avoided if she would have used a little common sense. You know it’s different over there why even try to challenge it? even if you in the public eye. Hopefully it work out for her tho.

    1. Exactly, the state dept warned not to travel to Russia. By the time she was sentenced America was aiding Ukraine and Putin was PO. What better way to get back at America. She is a political pawn. She should have stayed home.

  4. Don’t a lot of people usually say, “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.” Or something along those lines? Lemme guess a lot of them turned hypocrite now. In any case, if you’re stupid enough to do something that’s a crime that obvious you deserve what you get. Granted the punishment is a lot greater than normal, however that’s to be expected from such a country when looking through the lense of our current state of relations with them.

  5. Hee lawyer doesn’t look like she cares that much . Welcome to a real justice system . Enjoy your stay ….

  6. Don’t bring drugs to other countries!! We have Americans locked up in American prison for marijuana charges from the 90s. Remember that.
