The suspension bridge in the western Indian state of Gujarat had been closed for six months for renovations prior to the collapse.

At least 132 people were killed after a century-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river Sunday evening in the western Indian state of Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging in the water in one of the worst accidents in the country over the past decade, officials said.
Officials told local media over a hundred people plunged into the Machchu river when the bridge in the state’s Morbi district collapsed.
It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were on the 764-foot-long bridge, but officials fear the death toll could rise. The 19th-century, colonial-era bridge had been closed for renovation for almost six months and was reopened just four days ago.
State minister Harsh Sanghvi told reporters that 132 people have died so far and many were admitted to hospitals in critical condition.

My goodness there has been so much death in the world just this past weekend.
No more death than normal, we just have the ability to hear about things in real time and from across the world so it makes it seem like there is more.
What percentile is 130 of 7billion? We are fine, we will weather the loss of a few more humans.
Im not buying 130 people died.
It was water below deep enough to cushion fall
And there is no way that the tention and momentum from the cables snapping killed 130 people. So HOW???
Did a alot of those people have heart attacks on the way down from the fall or what?
I need answers…something aint adding up🤔

People underestimate the danger of cables that’re under high tension. Any bridge with this style of construction should always be inspected even more thoroughly than normal bridges.
@bob bobbinson hahahah 🏆 winning comment for being funny & polite 🎃
@jaknap1 Why don’t Indians know how to swim? It’s very interesting I never knew that
@Ocular Pressure in a relatively poor country, learning to swim is not a priority.
@jaknap1 if they hv access To water it would be more like a leisure or something fun to do. I do know from spending a few years in Mexico that the Hispanic population down there is afraid of the water and a lot of them don’t teach their kids how to swim and the elders don’t know how to swim for a few different reasons

why were that many people just standing on a suspension bridge like that?
@ectsy Amazing that the previous bridge lasted 100 years and didn’t collapse despite the same locals (bunch of apes) using the bridge. Yeah…it must be the victims fault!
@Infamy, Infamy. They’ve all got it in for me. you are saying the same thing he is, the bridge was good until these people tested the limit
@Hvyarms44 No, we’re not saying the same thing, I was being sarcastic. Unless you’re claiming that in 100 years no one ever tested the previous bridge like this?
That bridge served no practical purpose other than a recreational spot for the locals. People were literally “hanging out” there with their friends, lovers and families.

They’re literally shaking it on purpose, you can tell. They arent even crossing the bridge. They were all asking for trouble
Exactly!
It’s always moving
@jaay cb you’re right its a tension bridge, its not static. but my point is they deliberately jumped up and down and swayed side to side to test their luck.
That’s what I saw too

This makes me so angry. The deaths in Seoul were an accident, and better processes for crowd control should be put into place. But this is just negligence. Either someone, or multiple people, couldn’t be bothered to do their job properly renovating the bridge, and scores of people died because of it. There should be corporate manslaughter charges filed, but being India, there probably won’t be.
Unfortunately, you’re correct. The issue is that most Hindu’s believe in Karma.

How did 150 people die from this exactly? Did the cords like… whip them or something? That fall was short, and I live on a river with a strong current so I know that river wasn’t particularly intense. I almost find that hard to believe.
Edit: I was going to change the death count to reflect 130; but it’s risen to around 141, with many others reportedly still missing or in critical condition.
Very few Indians know swimming. People have almost zero access to swimming pools. People can’t spend money on weekends to drive to a lake just to swim. Swimming just isn’t a part of culture here.
@Kerry Hanley as I stated above the video itself doesn’t give details..you should really work on your reading comprehension. When you find the answers please share because as any person that has a brain can see a lot of us are perplexed by the outcome.
@Kanaka lata Hembram appreciate the insight

Most people in India don’t know how to swim. It’s a cultural thing.
This video probably has too low of FPS. I bet the tension from the cables was the culprit for the lost life.

It’s crazy to think some of (probably alot of) the people you see at the beginning of the video are no longer with us

Heartbreaking
More like cable breaking. This one sure does pull on the heart strings.
That’s what they want. To break the human heart. Which will never happen 🙂

dude with the white shirt should be held accountable.
People keep saying that some were shaking the bridge right before it collapsed. I don’t think this is the case. I would guess that some portion of the suspension cables failed, causing the bridge to shake and then causing a catastrophic failure in the rest of the bridge.
Did you even watch this video? It literally shows people shaking the bridge right before it collapsed…
it was reopen 3 days before after renovation and capacity of the bridge is 100 but there was 400 +people. u can see. now who u blame????

A bridge that lasted for a century and collapses just after six months of renovation? That whole project needs to be scrutinized from top to bottom, and people need to relearn how to do infrastructure apparently.

Causes of the incident
1. It was a British Era Bridge(above 140 years old)
2. The company who undertook renovation didnt get SAFETY STAR approval.
3. There were 500 people on the bridge More than maximum limit.
4. Plus some were swaying and jumping on the bridge.
Overall: the authority is to be blamed. No safety standards, guidelines. Plus they over sell their tickets.
Right but how do you die from falling 33 feet into water?

If anyone ever visits “gore” websites.. very unfortunate things like this happen a lot in India. Work place accidents, vehicle/motorcycle wrecks, suicide by train/big truck, on and on and on. Obviously not just India has these sorts of tragedies, but seems to be more at the top of the lists for them. Most videos like these are actually hard for me to watch ! Any video involving death etc. But I go to a “gore” website every so often to check out the ACTUAL dangers happening around the world! Reminds me of what to keep my eyes out for, and what to just stay away from. For example, roller coasters Lol Hell to the no for me. It’s not the ride that scares me.. it’s that I don’t know what kind of actual maintenance was done! Or lack of. Anything that I don’t have a fighting chance to save my life on.. I typically don’t take part in. Such as a old suspension bridge filled with people. Maintained or not. Big nope.
I’ve always wanted to see one of those websites,,, what’s a good site? Like how would I search for it? Oh by the way I feel the same way about roller coasters it’s funny I had to show my wife your comment because she always tries to get me on roller coasters and I absolutely refuse

Just look at the comments here and compare with the comments under the Seoul crowd crush news that happened around the same time. So much outpouring of grief for the latter, but sarcastic comments for the former! Seriously people, lives are lives! Have some empathy!
Prayers for the victims of both tragedies. Such a sad weekend.
This bridge definitely shouldn’t be opened to public without supervision
Its an almost ancient era bridge
Of course completely which did renovation should be heavily fined and engineers should be charged with at least 5-10 yrs of imprisonment
