@Paul Knowsit Lincoln really wasn’t all that conservative. He had a lot of liberal/progressive policies, like the extremely liberal move of freeing slaves, for his time. He’s actually often described as a classical liberal rather than a conservative by historians, despite his political party. Considering that the Civil War was largely about disagreement on liberal policy, it really was a liberal vs conservative war.
