Biden unveils climate change plan, halts new oil and gas leases on federal land

President Joe Biden signed several executive actions related to the climate crisis, including one directing the secretary of the interior to pause on entering into new oil and natural gas leases on public lands or offshore waters.
Biden and other administration officials have emphasized that the White House is taking a "whole of government" approach to climate change. They've also underscored that they believe the President's actions will help spur job growth, and categorized people working in industries vulnerable to job loss, such as coal miners, under their umbrella of environmental justice.
"Today is climate day at the White House and, which means that today is jobs day at the White House. We're talking about American innovation, American products, American labor," Biden said at the outset of his remarks at a signing ceremony. "We're talking about the health of our families and cleaner water cleaner air and cleaner communities. We're talking about national security."
He continued: "It's a future of enormous hope and opportunity. It's about coming to the moment to deal with this maximum threat that we exist with as now facing us, climate change, with a greater sense of urgency. In my view, we've already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis. We can't wait any longer."
The executive order on oil and natural gas leases directs the interior secretary to launch a "rigorous review" of the existing leasing and permitting programs related to fossil fuel development, and to identify steps to double renewable energy production from offshore wind by 2030, according to a fact sheet provided by the White House.
The halting of new leases fulfills a campaign promise by Biden and will expand an existing 60-day moratorium issued by the President on his first day in office. Biden's climate actions mark a sharp departure from the Trump administration's efforts to maximize fossil fuel production and expand oil and gas drilling on federal lands but climate emissaries for the administration emphasized they hope to build new job opportunities out of the changes.
White House climate czar Gina McCarthy described the order as one that "directs everyone who works for the President to use every tool available at our disposal to solve the climate crisis. Because we're going to take a whole of government approach."

  1. It’s very important that we take care of our planet but at the same time there should be a replacement for those who may lose jobs in the oil company.

    1. @steve marshall Rockefellers men are the ones that coined fossil fuel for oil, don’t think there’s ever been any fossils found as deep as they drill oil. Geologist have said there’s more oil than water on Earth.

Hey up man. Congratulations on your award for your work on Norway. Stunning fjords and coastlines.
Can’t you just magic up an Earth Mk.3 and I promise we’ll keep you away from Africa?

You’re right, and it’s a Conservative government here too. The economics of it are now heavily in favour of investment and getting ahead of the game.
We already sell green energy to other countries and the scope for growth in that market is exponential.

I believe it was also somewhere in Australia that they started using the Tesla Powerpack batteries. That facility saved around $40 million in its first year alone and has also helped to stabilize and balance the region’s unreliable grid.
Such utility grade battery storage and distribution solutions are also now becoming economically unbeatable. The new Tesla Megapack can be installed 4 times quicker than an equivalent fossil fuel power plant, at a fraction of the cost and with a massively reduced carbon footprint.

Lots of reasons to say don’t panic.

    1. Get used to lines bud. Welfare lines are going up. Unemployment up. Americas debt. U guessed it. UP UP UP!! I guarantee u we will be in a war before his first term is over. A purpose less war as usual per DEMOCRATs. War pays his contributors.

  2. How about starting to regulate field drainage. Look at this country’s flooding problems. We cannot keep draining at this record pace.

    1. @LadyStudio1 I mean he did say he was going to create jobs to replace the ones being taken away and more that are unionized with better pay so I’m not sure what the problem is. It’s always been about going where the money is and the money is no longer at the coal mines, we’re running out of coal and fossil fuels so why not use energy that won’t run out, i.e. renewable energy. idk it makes sense to me.

    2. I can not afford a new electric car. I’m going to start burning tires to heat my home and shop because gas is going up.

    3. @Duane Holcomb Livestock are currently responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gases, double that and see if it might make a difference. Mind you, I suspect you don’t believe the 14.5% either or in anthropogenic contribution to climate change.

  3. I legitimately feel for oil workers. Many of them come from communities where that is the only industry hiring. But sadly this is an industry that can’t go on forever. To deny that we have an impact on our environment is to deny objective truths.

    1. @Angel L You are correct that if one source of imcome is not a good idea. But we are not talking about me. We are talking av about all those who lost their jobs because of the shutdown of keystine xl. And as for me I stop thinking that either political party is ever going to save me. I invested my real estate 30 years ago.

    2. Tell that to the OPEC countries who don’t produce it nearly as clean as we do. This will help them, hinder us while speeding up climate change more.

    3. There will be a time when it will be more economical and reliable to use renewables than it is to use coal , oil and gas….we have not arrived there yet so fossil fuels will still play apart in our lives for some time

    4. @NunyVanstta135 nuclear is definitely good. Problem is Fukushima and Chernobyl scares people even though those type of reactors aren’t even used anymore. New ones are much safer. Chernobyl was mostly human error all the way.

  4. Sounds good to me. Anyone who is willing to take on Pentex and reverse the damage done to the country is good in my book.

  5. These people are purchasing their fuel at The American Legion. Fuel is leaded and good for a Buick. This is a riddle!!!

    1. It was like watching a ship just drift around the ocean, with no rudder or steering wheel, for the past 4 years.
Now the ship finally has a new rudder and steering wheel installed.

  6. While he’s at it, Biden can fix the DAMN IRS! They’re a BUNCH of CROOKS. I’ve been paying faithfully on my back taxes and these crooks just raised my back taxes by $200!!!! This is UNBELIEVABLE!

    1. My taxes went up too. But I also carefully read through what I was voting for locally and knew that my taxes would go up because of what I voting for.

And that’s ok. Because I voted for my taxes to be raised to get better schooling in my community. And I voted for Biden so that hopefully we could get closer to medicaid for all, which will also raise my taxes. Its for the better of my community

    2. @Brandie Lee you got got ripped off on better schooling. As for Medicare for all, the tax money you’re paying out you could pay for insurance.

    3. @Brandie Lee l hope you are right, because generally that money goes else where…but long term maybe the american people will be able to stand on their feet again….best of luck…👍

  7. 🇺🇸. Oooooohhhhhhhhhhhh Bro, Didn’t know you is This Guy, Wow , Well Spoken, God Bless America 🇺🇸
