During one of my returns to New Orleans, I was made aware of a painfully shady connection between Louisiana and Dominica.
I was having coffee with relatives at Royal Blend when an old family friend sat down to join the conversation. When I told him where I lived he said, “you know Louisiana and Dominica have a past”. Really ? I was so curious to know where he was going with this conversation. He began to tell the story of how some criminals from Louisiana, Texas, and Canada plotted to occupy and take over Dominica in the early eighties. They hoped to make Dominica a “criminals’ paradise”, filled with drugs, mafia, and casinos.
The book Bayou of Pigs by Stewart Bell tells the story of the criminals plan through the attempted execution. I don’t want to spoil the story for any readers out there, but what a fascinating tale of recreational Darwinism at work. My apologies Dominica. This is one link between Louisiana and Dominica that I would like to forget.
