It does happen, but it’s rare. From Statistics Canada, the total number of lives lost to influenza and pneumonia from 2015-2020 by age group:
Under 1 year: 61 (average of 10 per year)
1-4 years: 76 (average of 13 per year)
5-9 years: 23 (average of 4 per year)
10-14 years: 28 (average of 5 per year)
To put the above numbers into context, the total number of lives lost from all causes from 2015-2020 by age group:
Under 1 year: 10,226 (average of 1,711 per year)
1-4 years: 1,591 (average of 265 per year)
5-9 years: 982 (average of 164 per year)
10-14 years: 1,308 (average of 218 per year)
As you can see, influenza and pneumonia is responsible for a small share of total lives lost in each age group.

Influenza and pneumonia took the lives of 23 children aged 5-9 from 2015-2020 according to Statistics Canada data, or an average of about 4 per year.
So, it does happen, but it’s rare.
