MINISTER WALTER ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE TO FISHERIES SUB-SECTOR

Government subsidies have resulted in lower prices for fertiliser and animal feed

 

Roseau, Dominica – December 16, 2008……….Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Matthew Walter has announced that the Fisheries sub-sector in Dominica is currently benefiting from an investment by Government of  $4 million in response to the significant damage the sector suffered as a result of the passage of Hurricane Omar in October this year. The Minister made the disclosure at a Media Briefing at the Financial Centre last week.

GOVERNMENT SECURES US$9.16 MILLION FROM CDB FOR SEA DEFENCES AND ROAD WORKS IN POINTE MICHEL

Roseau, Dominica – December 16, 2008………..The Government of Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has secured a  soft loan of US$9.16 million from the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank to assist in financing the rehabilitation of sea defences and road works in the village of Point Michel damaged by the passage of Hurricane Omar.

 

The Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank approved the amount at their meeting in Barbados last week.

CIVICS WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS GETS UNDERWAY ON MONDAY

Roseau, Dominica – December 12, 2008………..A training of trainers’  workshop for secondary school teachers on the teaching of civics at secondary schools in Dominica gets underway on Monday, December 15, 2008 at the State House in Roseau, beginning with an opening ceremony at 8.30am.

Roseau, Dominica – November 17, 2008…….. Dominica’s Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has laid out his vision for Dominica as the Government seeks to build a modern economy in the face of mounting challenges in the international arena.

 

In his Address to the Nation at the Parade of Uniformed Groups on November 3rd 2008, the Prime Minister said that at the national level, “the new thrust must be based on maintaining platforms of energy, agriculture, tourism and enhanced citizenship“.

DOMINICA CABINET MEETS TO ADDRESS THE EFFECTS OF HURRICANE OMAR

Government approves initial amount of $3 million for fisheries sub-sector including an amount of $250 per week for one month for fisherfolk

 

cabinet_holds_press_conference_in_the_aftermath_of_omar.jpgRoseau, Dominica – October 17, 2008…… The Government of Dominica has moved swiftly to deal with the effects of Hurricane Omar which triggered huge waves and sea swells yesterday, effecting widespread damage to roads and other  infrastructure along the west coast of the island, inter island vessels and the boats and other equipment of local  fisherfolk.

 

Based on information provided by the Minister with responsibility for Fisheries, Hon. Matthew Walter, one hundred and fifty-three (153) boats have been severely damaged or lost and fisherfolk suffered damage to their engines, outboard motors, boat houses, fish aggregating devices(FADS) and other equipment. Five hundred (500) fisherfolk were affected.

DOMINICA FORGING AHEAD WITH GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Roseau, Dominica – October 17, 2008……. The Government of Dominica in collaboration with the European Union, The Regional Council of Guadeloupe, the Agence Francaise de Developpement and other French development partners is forging head with plans to exploit the country’s geothermal resource. This information came to light at the first Project Steering Committee Meeting for the Geothermal project held recently.

 

The Meeting was attended by Minister for Energy, Hon. Charles Savarin, Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vincent Philbert, Senior Project Officer in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Mr. Michael Fadelle, National Authorizing Officer of the European Development Fund, Mr. Edward Lambert, Mr. Paul Mondesir from the Office of the European Commission in Barbados and officials from DOMLEC, the Independent Regulatory Commission and the Private Sector.
