Despite recent mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa, Americans are pessimistic that new gun safety laws will pass Congress because of partisan polarization. But even in the mythical gun-loving wild west, sheriffs wouldn’t allow guns into town.
David Yamane, a gun-owning sociologist, discusses with Reality Check’s John Avlon the disconnect between gun mythology in America and its gun culture today.

A striking number from a new poll on guns
Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large
As Congress considers, again, the possibility of moving a package of gun control reforms, a number from a new CBS News/YouGov poll jumped out at me as evidence of why solving America's gun violence problem is so hard.
It's this: 44% of Republicans said that mass shootings are something we have to accept as part of a free society. (A majority of Republicans — 56% — said mass shootings are something we can prevent and stop if we really tried.)
That number is a striking departure from how the country as a whole views the issue. More than 7 in 10 Americans (72%) said that mass shootings could be prevented if we really tried, while just 28% said they were part of living in a free society.
Consider what those Republicans are saying: There is no policy — or cultural — solution to the problem of mass shootings. Instead, it is a necessary evil of living in a free society.
This is, of course, utter bunk.
Plenty of other free countries in the world do not have a mass shooting problem like we do in the United States.

“We all want only the police and military to be the only ones armed.” Hmmm, I question that logic for both sides.
There are a lot of “past” laws that were deemed unconstitutional. 🙄
How many are in the Bill of Rights?

For long-term investment perhaps if you have $5000 in BTC in 2016. That would valued at almost $600,000 today there is no metal in existence that has seen that kind of value increase.
@Thomas Jefferson Do well to tell him you were referred to him by one of his clients, so he’ll know you came for business
A transformation of my investment of $4000 to a $15,400 in just two weeks, so 😁
my spouse recommended him to Me after investing $2000 and he has really helped us financially, speaking from Australia🇦🇺
@Fixed Bet I’ve been searching all this while for a digital assets investment and I found Bitcoin to be most profitable of them all I’m definitely investing in it thanks you so much 🙏🙏
2:21 VISITORS, not residents. Pay attention to the details.
“Reality check” by Jon Avalon… even irony is offended.
haha thanks for this chuckle lol.
I remember what it used to be like, I was a shooter back then. No open carry, permits and training for concealed carry, 21 to buy guns or ammo, no loaded guns in a vehicle and assault weapons were not even a thing, NRA was all about safety and education. Now that the GOP and NRA have let the lightning out of the bottle, it will be hell trying to put it back in, if it’s even possible.
The biggest problem are those inexpensive polyframe 9mm automatics.
$200-$300 with 11-17 round clips that come standard. Cheap enough for anyone to own and they do.
Simple arguments turn to firefights in the streets.
Hard to believe they got an “expert” in guns and their history who seems to not have any idea what he is talking about and seems to have no answers other then 2 amendment ftw 😂
or release his slide before trying to holster it.
Did David just put his Glock back in the holster with the slide to the rear because he doesn’t know how to release it. WOW
that guy will shoot his own foot someday.
“gun expert” lol
More likely it has to do with the fact that he is probably being interviewed.
Restricting machine guns i don’t feel, is an issue, its the exhorbent 200 dollars a year to own something you already own and bought and took all the neccesary training for. You need a FFL or SOT to even buy a machine gun and even then its nearly 15k dollars to buy one. Essentially were reserving the “big guns” for the rich and well to do, while the poor are allowed to own their bolt actions and clips with less than 10 rounds in them. Lets not make the rich any more powerful than they already are.
Local governments violating the constitution in Tombstone in 1873 doesn’t provide reason to violate the constitution in 2022.
There has been no expansion of “Gun Rights”, but there has been an expansion of firearms permissiveness.
With more people armed and carrying simple arguments turn to shootouts with both sides of the argument able to empty 17 round clips in under half a minute.
That seem to happen at least once last weekend.
It’s called a magazine, not a clip
Gun control does not work last year in 2021 San Francisco Had 56 murders (which is not that bad) but take a look at Washington DC the same year where they Had 227 you can Argue that San Francisco has strict gun laws But Washington DC has some Insanely strict gun laws where they Literally banned handguns until relatively recently and yet somehow magically people were still murdered with them (after handguns were allowed back in Washington DC’s Crime rate decreased so yeah)
There is nothing wrong owning semi auto rifles of any kind banning isnt the solution the 2nd isnt all about hunting only. the reason the shootings happen the system wont put security in schools locking bulletproof doors and glass and armed guards
In reference to the country that spawned Jack the Ripper he said, “I don’t know if they have the history of violence that we’ve had.” I mean seriously, our history of violence was born from their history of violence therefore their history of violence and our history of violence are indeed one and the same.
Interesting news coverage, maybe it should be a class in respecting the right to life for all humanity..
Why are you gonna hurt law abiding citizens. And besides where did that kid get the money for that high end high end rifle of his. Did you do any investigation on that or are you gonna push the narrative as always.
If you can pull lettuce from the shelves for making a few kids sick, why not anything that isn’t a muzzle loader? Yeah some are needed for pest control and hunting but they don’t need to be fully automatic.
Can’t believe how ridiculous some gun laws are.
Hey @cnn why do we always compare ourselves to the UK, Canada and Australia? Those places barely have guns. Why aren’t we talking about Switzerland which has 2 million guns for 8.5 million people? That’s a much better example that could make people understand what it actually takes to live with guns safely. I’ve only seen the Daily Show pick up on that and it’s a shame.
This is because of American Exceptionalism gun control will not work because no one is giving up their guns you will create an insurrection. We love guns even poor inner city people. This why we need to lessen the damage.
