It has been said that if you look closely at a fallen structure, you would see that the termites have been at work for a while. The GOP had a chance to get Trump out during Impeachment, and avoided this entire fiasco. But instead, the GOP acted as termites in the last four years, destroying the integrity of American political system.
The GOP was trump before there was ever a trump. They placed him there to rob the world. Took us out of every agreement because our allies would have peeped that he was to unfit to lead. Americans have always over rated the stability of their democracy. Herbert Hoover created such a stir after the 1932 election that in 1933 the Twentieth Amendment was passed that moved the inaugeration date up to January 20.
Joseph McCarthy’s Red Scare was evolving into examining books like those of Thoreau and Melville in American foreign libraries; until Eisenhower leaked damaging information that helped end McCarthy’s reign of terror.
On the State level Huey Long, George Wallace and others did their best to subvert democracy.

McConnell and the GOP have sold this country’s future for a mess of judges.
@UChm0J4HQ5pmC3ZkKp2qBErg McConnell refused to allow Obama to appoint federal judges, keeping the seats open until Trump was elected. He has spent the last four years filling those seats, even calling the senators back from planned breaks and on weekends to do so. Even when Pelosi was pushing for him to come to the table regarding COVID relief, he refused; he was too busy filling judgeships. And all of the newly appointed judges are from the Federalist Society’s playlist–even the ones the American Bar Association deemed unqualified.
Tax cuts and Federalist Society federal judges. That’s all McConnell has done the past eight years he’s been Majority Leader. Even when he was Minority Leader he did his level best to block any meaningful legislation–and, of course, Obama’s nominees for federal judgeships and the Supreme Court. Twelve years of obstruction. What a record.
