eschdaddy, because the CDC wants crazy outrageous steps to reopen, that are unrealistic for smaller business. Like, instead of using silverware use plastic forks and spoons. What’s the cost of that? Now imaging you have to all of a sudden use everything that’s throw away vs. wash and reusing. That would be economically devastating for a business with a thin profit margin… The CDC would make these guiding rules/laws business would have to follow. Not everyone would be able to AFFORD to open.
We can open and still be safe. Let people choose for themselves.

Early January 2017, the U.S. Defense Department put out a Pandemic Response Report, which noted that the most likely and significant threat is a novel respiratory disease, like the corona virus, and warns of a shortage of ventilators, face masks, and hospital beds.
Then a week before Trump was inaugurated, Obama officials walked Trump’s senior security officials through a pandemic response exercise where they showed them a projection warning of impending shortages of key resources, including personnel protective equipment, (PPE) and ventilators. The Trump National Security Council was provided with, but chose to ignore a step-by-step playbook carefully crafted by the Obama administration and career officials – based on their own sometimes rocky experiences dealing with H1N1 and Ebola. Trump opting instead for the plan, “I’ll go with my hunches and ignore science, stir up my base, and when it all goes south…I’ll blame Obama.” methodology instead.
Two months later, Elizabeth Warren, Patty Murray, and other congressional democrats sent a letter to the head of the CDC, and to the head of HHS, Alex Azar, warning that Trump is already threatening at least 7 programs that focus on pandemic flu preparedness.
The Trump administration, beginning in 2018, gutted the nation’s infectious disease defense infrastructure. Trump cut funding for the CDC by 50%, cuts to the NIH and funding for medical research has also been slashed. The “pandemic response team” firing occurred in the Spring of 2018. It was reported that White House officials tasked with directing a national response to a pandemic had been ousted as part of cost cutting measures.
The Trump administration does nothing. In addition, it’s filled very few of the vacant senior positions critical to responding to an outbreak, and the sharp cuts Trump proposes to key government agencies lessens our ability to stop deadly outbreaks at their source BEFORE they become a pandemic.
Trump disbands the White House Pandemic Response team, led by Admiral Timothy Ziemer, in May 2018. But before that, in October of 2017 Ziemer writes a blog post for the White House website, noting that the world remains under prepared to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
Months later on Feb 13, 2018, the U.S. intelligence community puts out it’s worldwide threat assessment, which warns that a ‘novel strain of a virulent microbe that is easily transmissible’ continues to be a major threat, with the potential for a severe global health emergency, and major economic and societal disruption. Trump doesn’t read it.
That same month, the Trump CDC announces it is massively cutting pandemic prevention work in a bunch of countries, including China. A coalition of 200 global health organizations warn that critical momentum will be lost if that funding is reduced, and the world will be left unprepared for the next outbreak.
Jan 29, 2019, the U.S. intelligence community puts out another worldwide threat assessment, warning that the U.S. remains vulnerable to a ‘large-scale outbreak of a contagious disease that could lead to massive rates of death and disability’ and ‘severely affect the world economy.’
July 2019, the Trump CDC eliminates a key public health position in Beijing intended to help detect disease outbreaks in China.
October 2019, Trump administration cuts funding for Predict, which is a program to identify animal viruses that might infect humans, and head off new pandemics.
October 2019, the HHS puts out whats called, ‘Crimson Contagion 2019 Functional Exercise Key Findings’ which is marked ‘do not distribute.’ It was the result of a months long pandemic response simulation that found that the U.S. wasn’t ready for a pandemic like COVID-19. Among other things they identified that the U.S. didn’t have the means to quickly manufacture medical equipment, like N95 masks, anti-viral medications, and ventilators.
At this point Trump has received THREE YEARS OF WARNINGS!
I want to Hear from the CDC I want to be informed of what’s happening in the world! How can he Shut it Down? Will he get away with this too!
