Almost half of Americans said they felt lonely before the coronavirus hit and many states required people to self-isolate at home. While self-quarantining is the best way to flatten the curve, there are potential costs to mental health and well-being. Staying informed is vital to combatting those impacts, and there are proven ways to do it. Developmental psychologist Susan Pinker and attorney Jarrett Adams, who served over 9 years in prison on a wrongful conviction that was overturned, talk to MSNBCβs Ari Melber about the science and experience of isolation – and how to combat it β in this special discussion. Aired on 04/07/2020.

Keys To Combating Coronavirus Stress And Loneliness | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC
I mastered social distancing from people and now Iβm practicing social distancing from the fridge π»
I used the time to workout for an hour at home, before they were closing the gyms I bought weights luckily i have the space, i also do body weight workouts, i also fast for 48rs a week i save a ton money on food, i ben doing this close to year now, I encourage people to do this, it will keep you motivated.
I have put on 11lb since I started this lockdown. I used to have a great 6 pack abs, now I have a blob…
Keep it coming. We the people have a special gift, many of us find that humor gives us hope.
Soha AAA πππ€£π
Lol, yes me too, but the fridge keeps beckoning so I give in and go visit it, a couple of times a day
Imagine what its like for old folks in homes… Poor dears, some of them spend days on end alone if family doesn’t call or visit. This video made me call my grandma tbh
@petmom ful My heart goes out to you and your family…This has got to be the most difficult of times…If you can…visit her window…get a Kindle..something to her…to communicate…a walkie talkie…let her know…she’s not alone…Prayers and graces to your family !!!
This makes me happy for those senior citizens who know how to work social media to conter social distancing and isolationπ
@MrArchangel73521 Thank you, but she is too demented to do anything like that. Furthermore, I do not associate with my in laws at all anymore, after years of them treating me like an outsider. So I would not be visiting her anyway. It is a very long story. My husband has 5 siblings and the girls have kind of taken over their mom’s estate. He visits her regularly under normal circumstances but cannot now. I don’t even think they will let his mom out of her room.
@petmom ful I’m sorry to hear that…but please understand my sentiment …was well intentioned…!!! I know…the outsider realm …very well !!!
@Priscilla Robb My mom was always kind of upset at how the grandkids (my brothers’, not mine) rarely called or visited. It’s sad, but that’s just how a lot of kids are, at least until they grow up and smarten up.
The key is getting rid of Trump. That’s is the stress I’m under every day
Robert Linscott Those 15 cases went down to nothing in no time! Bone spurs is a genius!
Volunteer to be a COVID-19 victim that will show him .
This is TERRIBLE news! We need huge numbers of people to die, and for the economy to go into a major depression! It is absolutely critical that Trump not be reelected. A few deaths and total destruction of the economy will ensure Trump’s removal. — A compassionate, woke, caring, aware and enlightened Progressive with unconditional empathy and love
The globalist deep state has big plans for humanity . YOUTUBE or GOOGLE how ever you want to do it the GEORGIA GUIDESTONES read it .
@Robert Linscott Go back to Fox News for some more B.S. from Sean Hannity and the gang!
“D. Trump has 2 parts of brain, βleft and rightβ. In the left part thereβs nothing right, In the right part thereβs nothing left.” LOL
You are proof that we can’t fix stupid
David King, and in your skull there never was anything… well, except two marbles rolling around
@jeff mcgowan “While the representative acknowledges that there is no way to verify whether her recovery from COVID-19 was entirely due to the drug without further research, she credits Trump and the anti-malarial treatment for saving her.”
And religious people often credit God. “If not for God, I would have died in that car crash.” I’ll wait until there is research to support her claim.
scott schear and now that blind faith is killing them! A pastor has died after ignoring orders to stop religious gatherings. His daughter got it too, I wonder how many of them will die now? Very sad that their faith is killing them.
Good one!!!
Me: I love staying inside.
Everyone: Don’t go outside!
Me: Well, now I want to go outside. π€
@Ro G Sameππ€£π€£π
@The Zombie Whisperer What a lifeπ
@E Rich ππππ
It’s one thing to CHOOSE to stay home or not socialize much. It’s another to be TOLD not to. And even introverts do have needs for intimacy and socializing. We just need more down time than most and tend to have a few good friends rather than getting energized by the party scene and small talk.
@Michele Engel Marry me! π
Heh heh, yeah, I totally agree. Also, getting out feels like a struggle, but once I’m “there” the hours can fly by, but when I’m back home, I’m like, “yeah, I’m good for the next few days.”
I’M A LONER BY NATURE….and a home body…so this covid 19 mess is not bothering me in the slightest. More time for me to work on my graphic design.
Hexal One you get it lmao
I am retired and I depend on me, myself and I. I find people annoying and being social is not my forte. I have been refurbishing my 114 years old home. The wood on the outside has never been striped and it is about 1/8 thick paint. I have been working on it for 19 years now. Peace all be safe!
Hexal One nothing has changed in my days but it feels oddly comforting knowing others are home as well
omg, what if the next virus comes from beneath melting icecaps and the only way to stay safe is to be around others whose immune systems spread the cure. You have to glad hand at least 10 people a day and talk happoy horseh*t with a dozen more. ughh
Ditto this is my norm also more time for Damien Escobar music-violinist,grandchildren,son isolation as well.
Reading or learning a new language are probably best for this moment or taking interest in self education, in prison some people are locked up for 23 hours a day.
A lot of people are learning the hard way, the difference between _alone_ and _lonely_ these days. And she’s right, it _is_ painful, not having some resemblance of human connection.
A good start to combating Covid 19 would be to stand Trump down
Chinese government troll alert….
@Glock Coley You love the Russian one’s though
@Glock Coley meaning?
Finding out that being an introvert does have some benefits.
@Victoria Pena Wait until you get old. It has been researched and discovered that lonliness is the biggest killer among the elderly. Some of us Americans are too selfish to understand how things are bad for other people, especially the elderly.
Yep. My wife and I have never been social butterflies. No change for me. I like spending time with my wife and kid at home. we play video games and board game together, we have game nights, movie nights. Nothing different than what we’ve done before.
Judith Aldridge Great thanks inspiring words. Not American either thanks
Finding out that being prior to Covid an OCD germophobe was Great training!
Jarrett πππ Enormous kudos to your bravery and perserverence to get where you are!
Because of my immune system I have been self quarantine since March 12th. I live by myself and always have liked living by myself. Living by myself and being forced to be by myself are totally different. The only place i’ve been in almost a month is the grocery store. I can’t go to my friends house or have people come here. I talk to people on the phone but i’m starting to get cabin fever. The only thing that is saving my mental health is my dog Max. I would suggest that if you can go to the shelter and get yourself a best friend that’s is happy to see you get up in the morning it’s much better than being totally alone.
I am alone almost all the time, except for my little doggie. I like it that way. Right now itβs become a strength to enjoy my own company. On a regular basis, Iβm considered weird.
My heart goes out to everyone that are having a rough time with social distancing, unsure of their employment and worried about money.
This is a great sacrifice we all are doing. And though ALL of these will pass we must do this to save lives.
You will never know how many lives you saved and that’s ok. You are ALL heros for everyone else and especially to those on the front lines.
We are, in a very real sense, watching their backs! ππ
Step One: Do not watch daily Federal Coronavirus Task Force Update
More like the Federal Corovirus Trump Force Update To Reelection.
Shannon Bloom, BWAHAHAHAHA! Step Two: donβt be a lefty loon like yourself or MSDNC… oops, MSNBC
It appears introverts are now kings of the hill.
Yes Sirπ
We still think with our mouths closed though π
I never thought that being an introvert would be this beneficial for me.
Yes, it’s a true test of will.π
Right?!? I love this.
Remember to LOVE thy self. Nothing worse than being in self-isolation with someone you hate.
“Psychologically remove myself from my situation.” The Trump presidency.
I’ve been socially isolated for years nothing new to me now people know how I feel and have been forced to live my life for years
How to reduce stress: avoid watching any footage of Donald Trump, especially if you’re unfortunate enough to live in America.
