4 hours isn’t very long.
Any western fighter jet like the F-16 or Tornado (UK) takes time to train pilots and mechanics. Time to stop dawdling and send the used Mig-29’s offered by Poland and a couple other Eastern European countries! Ukraine has more pilots than planes, and they can fly them RIGHT NOW!
Or, can you image how fast A-10 warthog planes attacking Russian ground forces could turn the war for Ukraine. Shame we aren’t doing more to push Russia back.

@Johann Johann – Yes, 5 planes from each National Guard would be easy for the U.S. to do. You had a minor typo, I’m sure you meant to write *South* Korea. Last year, Poland signed a deal to buy 48 FA-50 light attack aircraft from South Korea. Poland should have no problem passing their old Soviet aircraft to Ukraine.
If it takes time to train then NATO should better start training RIGHT NOW!
Besides, long-range drones would also be great.

It really sounds like Ukrainian casualties have been enormous, like they’ve lost this particular battle. It’s hard to know because Ukraine doesn’t release _any_ casualty figures.
CNN finally bring someone on with a honest realistic oppinion that make sense retreat is not a defeat, fight and run away you live to fight another day better than surendering or getting anialated.
if bakmut doesn’t hold any strategic significance (as this major says) then why would Ukraine hold it to the bitter end ? they are almost encircled and all of the supply roads are either under fire control of the Russian or its in physical control of the Russians. there is only a 5km gap to complete the encirclement. to be honest it might be too late to retreat at this point. how are you going to squeeze over 15k troops with in 5km gap without getting them mowed down ?

I think Major Lyons is correct, positional warfare for strategically unimportant lines becomes attritional warfare in Russias favour.

Ukraine is loosing its citizens while Russia is loosing it’s prisoners.
A fighting retreat is always preferable to a complete rout!
Please help me with this. Ukraine is losing brave, well-trained troops. Russia is using a combo of untrained convicts and Wagner. Doesn’t this mean Russia has a large number of trained soldiers on standby? Wouldn’t it be wise to retreat and setup defensive lines while better tanks and missiles start arriving from America and West Europe?
There may be no one in these comments that can actually say… That would include me too !!! If there had not been so much damn foot dragging on Heavy Weapons… The momentum that the Ukraini Army had may not have stalled !!! I would agree that a New Offensive using Combined Tactical Weaponry would keep the News Cycle exciting as the Ukrainian Army puts the Russian Army back on the run in Mass Exodus… The New Armor would aid in Blitzkrieg (lightning war) and clear trenches of dug in troops faster than Greased Lightning

Wagner is brave and trained, not the convicts
I would of guessed plenty of Ukrainian pilots have been in the US or UK for over 6 months training on these jets already.
They are.
First off go back to the beginning of december. There were a number of mockups moments that cost Ukraine this city. Also fueled by not letting the Ukraine military train on those weapons systems and tanks helicopters jets and other stuff before we were sending it over. That should have been done and started to set it up logistically by NATO and given that Poland would be the main hub. Now that being said in January the issue Ukraine had was that it was more impotant than a neutered dog. Ukraine went on the defensive as a maneuver when Russia exploited a couple of times when Russian troops exploited either rotating of Soldiers. Or by finding and probing then sending human wave after wave to run Ukraine black on Ammo to then have to fall back because of being overwhelmed. HOWEVER here is when they should have done several smaller counter attacks to get the Russians to back off a bit and put them on there defence to make them use there recon and other elements. Had they given their new brigades more time to get antiquated with the Bradleys and other new weapon platforms. And Right now they should be getting those pilots in the sky for A-10 and F15, F16, F18 and either PHU Hewies or Black Hawks. Hell we gave the taliban enough why not give them to Ukraine. Even the Alamo was lost for a moment in American history. It’s what you do when your down that shows the world what you’re made of. Get Bakhmut back and remember those that gave it all.
I figured drones had completely replaced the need for live pilots but seems there is an actual strategy using jets to advantage. Discuss amongst yourselves, lol. Slava UA.!!

Strategic retreat is not a sign of failure. It’s a sign of wisdom.
Only when Ukraine does it though right? When Russia did the same in the port city of Kherson it was considered a “failure”.

I don’t see a real downside to at least working on getting F-16’s and even A-10’s ready. Start with all the training and logistics. Even if it takes a while. So what. And what if the capability is ready faster then expected? Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.
