Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed a law making California the first state to mandate public middle schools start no earlier than 8 a.m., and high schools before 8:30 a.m. CNN's Michael Smerconish speaks with sleep expert Wendy Troxel about the benefits. #CNN #News

Teens and Students where you at?
our time has come! Protest
With Unity we can ask to change the school attending time to 8:30 instead of 7
Whos with me?
Sorry. Either way, I’m sleeping in.
Too bad my school starts at 8:20 and ends at 2:25
should have figured this out when I went to school. lol
Teens need more sleep.
That also means enforcing laws against noise of leaf blowers etc before 8 am.
im sure they knew but as capitalist they were thinking how will it effect working parents
They did figure this out decades ago, must be a slow news day
No kidding. I lost sooo much sleep in high school.
I would hate getting out of school 4 or 5 in the afternoon
Especially during rush hour.
Pussification of America
Decrease school hours. Most of the time spent in school is wasted anyways.
It should help with kids hangovers
I’m a freshman in high school and i stay up until 11 or twelve doing homework since I am in 2 ap courses and the rest preap exept for my language and engineering classes and i have to wake up at 5 in the morning so this would be so helpful in trying to stay awake in class.
Nobody told you to be a nerd. Get your degree a couple of years later like the rest of us.
It would just roll the clock back further. If you have an actual schedule, the time on the clock is immaterial. It’s the time on the task that is relevant.
@Armed Rodent i dont have time for games often anymore
Neeeeeeeeerd
I agree man. You guys need more sleep. This is insane!
If this helps children I’m all for it.
@Demonica Hellspawn 30% comes from cars, and again, we have cleaner alternatives already.
@Mirthandirxiii I believe that. But the answer isn’t in the same crooked greedy politicians who allowed this situation in the first place. The same ones we know receive huge amounts of money from the same corporations and factories spreading all the pollution, building cars to rely on fossil fuels, and oil cartels.
@Demonica Hellspawn Then what, let it go on? They will not change because it’s more profitable not to.
@Mirthandirxiii no. We can’t let it go on. But, I know that these same evil sociopaths who are destroying the planet are heavily invested in making us feel like it’s our fault and I think that’s evil squared. Maybe a few executions after being prosecuted in a world court?
because waking up early in the morning sucks. enough said
yeah you really should allow all the good paying jobs go to people who can get up and be productive
#BERNIEBURNOUTS 😜👈
@STATIC TV yo bro shooting fentanyl is hard work. why be so judgmental ?
in cities – yes, in countryside – no
I wish they had night school back when I was a kid 4pm to 10pm would’ve been cool.
As a parent and a teacher, I see this in a lot of students. For those taking the bus, it is nice for them not have to stand in the street in the dark in the early morning too, which I always thought was unsafe. Time will tell if it is beneficial.
Trumpies hear “science” and think “blasphemy!” I personally didn’t know about the melatonin-related phase delay. I assume she’s referring to the sleep cues we all get from darkness, teens biologically can’t fall asleep for a couple hours after everybody else does. I wonder what the evolutionary reason for this might be…??
Your life must suck
Starvin Marvin Sick burn bruh
the problem is artificial blue light, natural blue light comes from the sun at a certain time in the day, blue light inhibits melatonin. All you have to do is put a blue light filter app on ur phone or pc 1 to 2 hours before u go to bed and boom u can literally feel the melatonin releasing. I don’t know why this info hasn’t gone mainstream yet cause it really does works.
trump turds believe the earth is flat. Don’t worry they’ll go extinct soon.
Well that’s too bad for me. I hated going to school by 7:40 AM (I think it was) during my high school days.
I definitely think it would’ve helped me.
12pm – 7pm school time is perfect.
that would be so nice.
The problem is it is dark when you get out, people won’t be able to play sports.
@Billsama Bin Clinten They can have the sports practices before school instead
That explains why I could not get out of bed as a teenager.
However it does explain why I can’t get out of bed as a 51 year old.
Are there schools that start earlier than this?
In New Zealand all school starts 8.45 or 9.00.
My school starts 7.00 am, and always forced me to attend flag ceremony every Monday for 1 hour from elementary to high school students.
I’m from Indonesia.
Schools don’t start until 9am here in Australia. We’re sensible enough to know that teenagers need more sleep because they’re growing kids.
Amethyst // Both New Zealand and Australia seems like quite sensible countries,.. 👍
I’ve graduated but our school started at 6:45
@Amethyst Im amazed at these hours, maybe they’d have less school shootings if they all got some sleep. I thought 9 am was rough lol .
I did the math guys here is what I found out..
There is only 24 hours in a day
*23.9, or 24 depending on your definition of “day”
California finally does one thing right
This is so true…..
I remember my high school days.
The entire day was a success when I had the first class off.
Schools: No, no I don’t think I will
